  • I need not have worried as it turned out perfect and everyone enjoyed the meal.

I was wondering if you can put frozen veg in casseroles, I don't really like using them but for convienience it would be handy.

I'm now going to buy my own slow cooker - but alot bigger than the 1.5 litre one I borrowed

Mmmm I have just been reading through this post and some of the receipes sound scrummy :)

I have had my slow cooker on all day, well since midday but it is a fast low cook if you know what I mean..

I literally put some stewing steak in as it comes out the packet, I didnt even chop it up this time. Cut a large onion and threw that in with the steak, then put a jar of Asda's beef in ale sauce and half a jar of water. I have just checked it and it is gorgeous, the sauce is all thick and scrummy, and the meat is falling apart as I lift it.

I'm still learning with this slow cooker, its a Paul Rankin 6 litre jobby, has a high, low and keep warm setting and it definately takes a bit of getting used to.

My other half at weekend put me off buying a a slow cooker from car boot.
Are they economical considering amount of electric they must use?Why not leave cooker on low instead?
Also with chicken I worry about salmonella?Without getting to high temperatures is it safe to cook chicken?
    Can someone convince me?

They only use the same amount of electricity as a lightbulb!

It does get to high temperatures! No harm here to me or any other old styler that uses one as far as I'm aware.

It really is the best thing I have EVER bought, EVER!!

So am I right in thinking you can chuck everything in, even frozen, i.e meat.

I've got some beef steak cubes that have been in freezer for a while now, and I'm really desperate to use them!

  • I have just been reading through my instruction book of my new slow cooker (brag brag brag;) and it says defrost all meat and veg before cooking. I would hate anyone to get food poisoning

The stuff you put in a slow cooker must be fairly hot to begin with. You can put in fridge-cold meat with boiling liquid, but if you put frozen stuff in it will really bring the temperature down & the slow cooker can't heat it to the temperature needed.

If you really don't have time to defrost the beef cubes in advance (although it is probably better if you do leave them to defrost overnight if you are going to put the SC on in the morning) - what you could do is to fry the beef first, perhaps with some onions, then add the veg, then the stock or whatever liquid you are using, in a large pan. When the liquid is boiling, then put the whole lot in the SC. I hope that makes sense.

That is how I usually make sausage casserole, cos I have forgotten to take the sausages out to defrost!!!
  • Hi I bought a half leg of lamb which I got for half price from Tesco. I really would like to give the slow cooker a go!

Any ideas on how long i should put it in for, and do I put the pots in at the same time????

Any ideas I would be really grateful!
