Need to borrow £750 but don't start new job for a week?

  • It seems it can get a little heated on here  (the MSE forum not just this thread)!!

Anyway, thank you all for your replies :grouphug: I do appreciate it.

I was so close to considering a PDL earlier until posting on here and getting back the advice. I thought if I borrowed £500, paid it back within a couple of months it wouldn't cost to much. But from reading other threads the charges are huge and i'm convinced it has to be the last resort for anyone.

I'm not knocking people for having to take these kind of loans out because of their situation, believe me i'm pretty desperate myself. But if at all possible AVOID at all costs.

    Cheers everyone!

So the OP should be pointed in the direction of a PDL company or loan shark?

It's an unpleasant situation that the OP is in. Testing an individual's ability to cut back dramatically can often find a preferable alternative.

Challenging the need to borrow is better than encouraging people to get in to expensive forms of debt.

It's possible that the door to door angels of Provident may be a solution here. But is that really the first option to throw in the air?

I think you're flattering yourself saying you were "challenging the need to borrow".

Nobody's saying OP should rush straight to a payday loan company...but if someone comes on and says "I need to borrow £750", to just turn around and say "no you don't" really isn't particularly helpful.

Even payday loans can work out cheap in the long run compared to the damage a couple of defaults can do for your credit record, so I think trying to keep a little more of an open mind may be the way forward...

Ok, next time I'll just post a Wonga affinity link and bag myself a few quid.
  • Can you sell anything? Either one big asset (eg sell car for £5k and buy banger for £1k) or smaller items on eBay (old clothes, gadgets etc) or do you have any jewellery, watches etc you can sell? Will any of your creditors postpone payments, for example, can you take a mortgage payment holiday? I wouldn't normally recommend this, but can you pawn anything?

As soon as you start your job contact HR and ask about an advance of salary? Would recommend any of the above before going to a PDL. have you claimed any benefits you are entitled to during your out of work period, have you claimed statuory redundancy pay?

Why are you only getting three quarters of what your employer is paying each month in respect of what's owed to you?

  • Hi Voyager,
Re the unpaid wages, I will still get the full amount (depending on him paying the HCEO) but it will take longer as they take their 35% out each month. I guess that's how they work and at least it's making him squirm a bit now the debt collectors are on his case and the longer he leaves non payment the more interest he incures!!

Because of that though i've gotten so behind on rent, utilities etc...

    Hi fluffnutter,

    Please see above.
