Thank God Bonfire Night's over

Poor dogs had a terrible night.

Idiot man down the road - local drug dealer - flashing the cash with absolutely massive fireworks in the middle of our very narrow side road with gangs of kids around him. Setting them off till well after midnight and I thought my dogs were going to have heart attacks, they were so terrified.

Explosions, bright flashes, screaming and shouting...on and on. Couldn't even let the dogs out in the garden for a wee till 1am.

Can't say how much I detest fireworks.

My dog became chicken little, she thought the sky was falling down :p

Some people will still have fireworks for the next week or so and then we get new year so no rest yet :/
  • Agree totally with you both  they were still going on at 10.30 where I live. My poor dogs didn't know whether they were coming or going and the 13 yr old was stressed out to the max :(

I'm so lucky with all my animals none of them are fussed in the slightest.

Molly the husky likes to watch them so me & her go out in the garden to watch. Codey the other husky normally just sleeps or plays with his toys sometimes he'll join us girls.

On Saturday night 3 of the cats were at the window in the spare room watching them. The others were just mooching around playing or sleeping.

I don't know why mine are so calm but they just don't get bothered. I went out for a meal last night got home about 9ish and they were all ok. Nothing damaged no signs of distress so I was really please :)

So true no let up yet from them. Always think new year can be worse you get all the animals fast asleep then come midnight all hell breaks loose outside.
My old black lab used to hate them this was the first year without him it was so strange no running around frightened hiding under the table.
Luckily my new 11mth black lab did not mind them, hope it lasts just new year dreading when midnight comes and he will be fast asleep.

Tyson was fine last year because I was prepared with the Zylekene.
I didn't get round to it in time this year though.
He was pacing around panting alot and stuck to my side the whole evening.
He did settle when I sat down and ignored him though.
I even slept on the sofa as he wasn't happy when I went upstairs and left him.

Going to get it written on the calendar in nice big letters ready for next year!

Luckily my dogs aren't too concerned by them, except for the ones that sound very close.

I just hate them because the inconsiderate goons around here fire them off until past midnight and do so pretty much for the rest of the year at this point.

I went to a firework display at the weekend and was amazed that some people had took their dogs!

We were standing next to someone who had a young spaniel, and the poor dog was terrified. It didn't know what to do with itself. It was going in circles. It had its head to the ground, and then clamped behind their owners knee - at one point, it would have been funny if the dog hadn't been scared witless - it was standing on 2 legs, with its front 2 legs wrapped round its owners legs, with its head burrowing into her.

I also saw someone with a young golden lab, but didn't see them during the actual fireworks. I don't know if they thought they could acclimatize their dogs by taking them when they were young, but in my opinion it was just cruel.

I don't have any pets, but I do have a firework phobic son, who is now 24. He used to miss about 6 weeks of school every year due to them, and he's even had aversion therapy for it, so I know how fireworks affect people and pets. I would ban sales of fireworks to the public and only have them in organised displays. It's the not knowing when they're going to be going off that gets my son. If you know there's going to be a display you can take measures to avoid it - not going out, wearing headphones, turning up the TV, putting on music, etc

Just Diwali to get through now  and that always seems to go on for days round here!

Also my Mum saw a man out at a firework display on Sat night with a rescue Rottie - which was apparently howling, whining & yelping in distress. My Mum went to speak to him to suggest that it might be painful for the dog, due to the extra sensitive hearing, but he just sat "well he's got to get used to it"!!!!! !!!!!!.... who vets these people?!!:eek:

My son has dyspraxia and has hyper-sensitive hearing, and going by what he tells me (seeing as dogs can't!) he says it hurts.
