Pin number changed without my knowledge

Hi all,

I've just had my card refused at the supermarket, and when I went to the bank they said I have the wrong pin number, but it's the one I've been using for ages. So it's been changed without my knowledge somehow since Friday. The bank weren't bothered, they've just arranged for a new one to be sent to me but should I be worried? There hasn't been any strange activity on my account, so I'm probably making a big deal out of nothing.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

Can you check your account online to see if there have been any unauthorised withdrawals or debits?

  • Can they not tell you how/ when/ why it was changed?

The PIN is stored in the card itself as well as in the banks systems and so it must have been changed by them via a cashpoint or such

PINs aren't stored by banks anywhere. What they will be able to tell the OP is when it was last changed.

How do they offer to check the pin online or to ask for a reminder then?

Have you tried your card in a ATM?

Only way the PIN could be changed is if someone knows it and goes to a ATM to change it.
Not even the bank could change it, without stopping the card. You can only readvise of the old number.

TBH. My money is on the wrong number being entered. Is this a joint acc and you have used the wrong card in error?

Go to a ATM, enter PIN and if it lets you go to PIN services and unblock PIN.
If it won't let you in, saying incorrect PIN. Then you need to look at who may have taken your card that knows your PIN. Then gone to a ATM to change it and then put it back.

I think this is incorrect, Banks will order new pins it is up to you if you want to change it back via an ATM.

I don't believe that. If that were the case, how would they be able to send you a replacement/renewal card with the same PIN?
Give a man a fish, and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish, and you’ll get rid of him every weekend.

Well certainly our systems only have a option to readvise of PIN.

Unless the card is stopped and replaced. In which case there is a option to change pin in event of atm fraud.

What i meant was that they aren't stored so that anyone has access to them. A readvice is sent from the system, no-one at the bank will know what the PIN is.
