I want to leave Virgin

We've been with them for over a year and now we'd like to switch to someone else. Unfortunately I've lost my documentation when we moved house 6 months ago. What I don't want is for them to try and claim I'm under contract when I don't have the relevant info to hand. Should I ask them for a copy of my contract before starting cancellation, or will they just let us go?

If you moved house 6m ago and took VM with you, then you will have commenced a new minimum term contract, probably 12 months.
That's the deal when you accept a free move, though they usually 'forget' to tell you.
So the odds are that you've still got 6m to run.
Bear in mind that if you have VM cable, then you cannot have any other supplier unless you first install or reconnect a BT-cased line for ADSL broadband. There are no other cable suppliers. This does not apply if you are on Virgin National (ADSL ) service.

Not sure if this still works, but a few years back when I had full package and wanted to cancel i was still under contract so i told them i was moving abroad so would no longer need the service but would contact them if/when i was back in the country. It also avoided them asking for moving address etc.

Moving abroad does not void your contract without penalty, if it did then the rate of (claimed) emigration would soar!
About the only exception is for members of the armed forces called up on active service, although this is a voluntary concession, not a legal one.

Thanks all. As macman predicted, when we moved we were put on a new contract (18 month). What is the penalty for ending the contract early?

Either the full or part of the predicted outstanding balance of the remainder of the contract which would vary depending on the services you have, plus disconnection fees.

You are not allowed to leave virgin, contract or not..its written into their rules that they must not let anyone leave their services !
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Ok, got it. Now how do I avoid "automatically" moving to a new contract after 18 months? Do I have notify them in advance that I don't want to renew? Otherwise I've made a note in the calender for 2 weeks prior so I can sort out the move away.

It's not automatically renewed. But with VM almost any change to your tariff or bundle will start you on a new minimum term-as does a home move. Once OOC, you need to give 30 days notice.

you can give notice 30 days before the end of the contract to disconnect on the final day.

If you wait two weeks before you would end up having to stay two further weeks before the contract could be ended.

Set the alert for 31 days before and give them a ring...
