Hello,
Hope I'm posting in the right section. In a few weeks I'm having to travel from Merseyside to Hull for an operation. It's about 2-3 hours away and my operation is in the morning so we are having to stay the night before.
I was just wondering if I can claim the hotel room expense back? I don't mind paying petrol to get there (and back) but paying for a room as well is probably going to set me back, so if I could get it back it would be a big help.
I've applied for ESA if that's of any help & I can only get the operation done at Hull there is no other option for anywhere closer to me. If I can claim back, how do I go about doing so?
Thank you.

Are you on any means tested benefits (income support, LHA, council tax benefits) ?
Edit - I know this isn't what you asked for, but overnight accommodation doesn't have to be majorly expensive

The link isn't working for me. I'm taking a look for some reasonably priced places. Thanks!
(And no, I've only just applied for ESA). ~

I cannot find anything about overnight accommodation, but there is a link here for information about claiming the cost of travelling expenses
https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=reimbursement+of+travel+expenses+hospital&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a
Sorry the above link didn't work, but if you google the site you will see that there are a number of places offering accommodation for around £40 per night for the room.
EDIT - just tried the link for accommodation and it worked for me, so I don't know the answer to that!I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -
If it is only 2-3 hours away, I assume you have to be there for 9?, then can you not just leave early at 5ish0

HiYa Patronus,
- its unlikely
- its not a requirement / need
- simply a preference / choice
- its just over 120 miles and all motorway
- that's just over 2 hours not 3
You will be the slowest car on the road @ 70mph, that average will take 2 hours and 11 minutes, best of luck with the op!
Ring the DWP helpline in Blackpool and ask, the worst you will do is lose £3 on an 0845 number - you could, if you can make a hardship case ask them also about refund of travelling expenses.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. Last time it took nearly 3 hours due to traffic so you can never be too sure. Do not want to be late so staying the night before is the best option for us. It's no problem, I'm sure I'll manage. You can't always go 70mph when there is traffic. I'll sort something out, thanks folks.~

Merseyside to Hull is never two hours, not in a million years.
My mum was in hospital in Hull and it used to take us two hours from Manchester. Merseyside is a good way further west than M/cr. It can be a difficult stretch of motorway - wide open and high, and prone to high winds and driving rain, and you can't tell what the weather will be like at this time of year.
OP I wouldn't want the stress of doing that drive early in the morning either. You will want to just focus on the operation.
Good luck!I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -
OP, Merseyside to Hull is very doable in 3 hrs but to avoid the idiots on the m62 in the rush hour i would leave at 4.30ish, this will give you plenty of time to get to the hospital and get yourself settled before you arrive on the ward.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0

This might be a long shot but I'll share my experience and it might be that the hospital you are going to have a similar system. When I had to go to a national hospital over 2.5 hours drive away I was put in touch with the hospital's PALS team and we explored two options. One option was that the hospital had contacts with charities who cover cost of accommodation for one night. Like I said it might be a long shot but perhaps it is worth a phone call.
If you have no luck, maybe consider travelodge. I've just searched the website and found a double room for under £30 per night. http://www.travelodge.co.uk/
I hope the operation goes well0 -

My hospital is 300 miles away (Liverpool University Hospital, Prescott St - Brighton) which I go to every 6/8 weeks for check ups.
I do that journey in one day by train.
Leave home at 9.45am, arrive at the hopital at 2.15pm, then get the return train at 6.20pm which gets me home at 11.00pm.0
