Errr...no, it's not. It's more like a supermarket setting aside stuff for you, which you then never show up to pay for.

I'm sure the staff were all very glum when they heard the news.

Not all of us can afford to shell out what amounts to a £20 fine for not spending money. Other credit card companies do not charge such a fee.

Think of the £20 as a fee for a lesson in remembering to read the small print.

So? You're suggesting that any provider of any product should always charge the same?

Struggling to see why you would have a card like an Amex and not use it even once for an entire year (and yet be a member of the MSE forum). Smacks of poor organisation to me
  • Why not just use it once or twice a year and pay off in full? Or put an annual recurring payment, like breakdown cover, on it to ensure useage? I can kind of see why they would charge an admin fee if never used.

    Just got charged this too.

Rang up, cancelled my card and they refunded/took off the charge.

I have also just been stung by this scam.
There was no email warning in advance - just a £20 fee on the statement.

When I took the card out in 2008 there was no such dormancy fee.
It was added in 2010 - unless you read the small print it was not at all obvious.

Even if you were aware, to me it is yet another way for big business to scam money from customers. It's rather like a supermarket charging you an extra £20 because you haven't shopped there for 12 months.

I've cancelled my account. American Express know where they can stick their card.
