Talk Talk price rise

I have recently taken out Talk Talk's YouView TV package and - despite the high price of Sky Sports - I think the new TV service is great, and the installation engineer upped my sped from 7 or 8 Meg to 12.

However, less than 1 month after taking out a new 2 year contract, Talk Talk have sent me an email announcing a price rise from 1 Jan 2013 - surely this can't be allowed?

And they are STILL advertising the old price of £14.50 when it is now £15.50 (for TV/broadband).

Isn't this illegal?

  • I do agree, the actual product is good, it's the rest that let them down.

Welcome to the forum. This question is asked several times each week.
Yes, it is allowed, as the minimum term contract you agreed was not a fixed price one-they can if they wish increase the price at any time, even the day after you contract.
Since the price has not yet gone up, they can advertise it at the current price. Nothing illegal about that.
Exactly the same applies to your mobile contract.

Making it legal, does NOT make it right.

The OP didn't ask if it was right, they asked if it was legal.
If you agree a variable price contract, how can you possibly object to a price increase?

  • But surely they can't still be advertising the OLD price to the public (in full page adverts!?) when they've told customers it will go up in January, less than 2 months from now?

Maybe I should have asked, does it breach any guidelines, e.g. Ofcom?
  • I can't talk for the OP, but when I agreed to received the service, I also agrees on a price for the duration of my contract.

Did I ask if there was some tiny print stating TalkTalk can do as they please, No.
    Why?
Because I asked if the price I agreed to, was the price I would pay for the duration of the contract.
Maybe a little naive of me to trust the words of the second largest telecoms company in the country, but there you go.

If I thought for 1 minute my price would rise after a month or 2, I would have never signed up.
  • I agree with you. I spent 25 minutes yesterday, trying to find out how to get free of Talk Talk, as they have put my price up twice in a year despite paying a year up front for line rental. I got no where, and they would not honour the statement on the web that said" if you give notice within 30 days of notification you can leave without penalty"

All the foreign call centre would say is " you cannot leave us, you must stay with us"
We are OAP's what can we do ? Where can we go ? They will not listen and are a law unto themselves .

If you have paid line rental saver, then the only increase can be on your other services (calls and broadband).
Give written notice within the 30 day period as required and leave.

Have the prices of those other services (calls and BB) gone up? If so, by how much? (I suspect this may be relevant for those who have paid the VLR - value line rental).
