They're only telling part of the story. My SIM free iPhone 5 did NOT lock itself to the first nano SIM inserted, and I would be mightily hacked off if this was even suggested.

Only if the phone has a network subsidy will it be auto-locked, not if purchased as. SIM-free purchase.

Contract iPhones are all locked to the contracted Network, no matter where you buy them from.

I presume you bought your sim free iPhone from Apple?

As per the links from CPW, this locking to first sim ONLY applies to iPhones bought from them.

Then the phone would not be Sim free

If you buy an iPhone from cpw and you buy it on O2 , Orange Vodafone contract then it will be locked to that network

If you buy it Sim free then it should never be locked to a network

I suppose if they tell you at the time of purchase then there's nothing you can do ...But if its in the small print and they don't show you at purchase then they are breaking the law.

The disclaimer is on the website, and supposedly also on the wall in store.
There have been a number of buyers who weren't told directly complaining on Apple forums like AVF.

When they have gone in the sales staff just use the disclaimer. I know one of them appealed to Vodafone (the first sim in) who arranged a goodwill unlock for £20.

Another guy had bought the iphone for use abroad (and told the staff it was for use abroad) and was still fighting a refund last term I read his posts.

CarphoneWarehouse try and twist the definition, according to them sim free just means no sim is included, not that it's unlocked. Sneaky and immoral, but somehow they get away with it.

Just to clarify, I (not the OP) was the first person to make mention of an iPhone and Carphonewarehouse. This was in direct response to another member who said that simply putting in a sim would not lock a phone to a network. I was simply giving an example of when this could be the case, but the OP themselves have not made any mention of the phone being an iphone, or that it was bought from CPW.

By default when activating a iphone it locks to the network sim in it when activation occurs, even MVNO sims will lock to the parent network - this came from Apple support, the assumption is MVNO's obtained their iphone stock from the MVNO network owner.

When bought outright a network cannot charge unlock. Apple do not allow it & charge should be dropped, this was clarified to me by Apple and my network had to unlock free, this was all done in 1 conference call instore between me, store employee, network/iphone dept & Apple support, Apple support told them they could not charge unlock fee for sim free outright purchase even at a "network" store as they act as extentions to Apple stores.

You need to speak to the iphone dept at your network, explain it was a outright sim free purchase. they may ask you to fax/email a copy of the receipt - moreso if the problem is if you bought from "networkA" and activated with a sim from "networkB".

Within 3 weeks new my 3GS went faulty & replacing it instore the network also processed a free unlock on the replacement without asking and said in 24 hours it will be unlocked & to sync with itunes to activate the unlock.

Great customer service, poor mobile phone.

The iPhone is great at everything except for being a phone.
