I want to change provider but keep my email address?

I am wanting to move from Virgin Media (have been for some time), but what stops me in the main is that I believe I will have to change my email address. I suppose it is like moving house and eventually (after redirecting for a while) I'd have to tell everyone I know of my new house address. Somehow with email it seems…

One up for Orange - now there's a novelty! I moved ISP from Wanadoo (Orange) to BT almost 2 years ago but still have my old Wanadoo email address live and active but web based. Every 250-odd days I have to go through some form of online reactivation - but it avoided exactly what the OP is on about, trying to remember what/who, not in your address book, has your "old" email address!
