There's nothing at all wrong with Vista IMO, especially if you are buying it on a new machine (where the drivers will have been tested to work on Vista). That said, there's nothing wrong with XP either, so I guess it depends on how much you want some of the new features of vista (e.g. Aero) and how much more it will cost.
    Nice to save.

I'd stick with XP for now...Dell were bundling Works 8 with their Vista machines....and it was NOT fully compatable !!!

aero is just a fancy toy, see here

Aero is the new "singing, dancing 3d desktop", If you've ever seen Apple OS X, its that basically.
  • from Jan 2008 you wont have a choice anymore. Vista or nowt...

If you are buying a new PC, I'd get Vista unless you have some piece of equipment that doesn't have drivers for Vista.

Aero is just a pointless gimmick, and you'll need to spend more to have it available. https://www.dmxdimension.com

Vista on a new machine, don't bother upgrading an XP machine though. I have the Aero thingy, it looks good but not worth the extra. In retrospect I could have saved a few quid and got the Vista Basic version.

Check the https://www.dmxdimension.com website every Thursday and Saturday mornings (when they update the prices).

    What Laptop ?

Go for an Inspirion 6400 with a minimum of a 'Intel Core 2 Duo T5200 1.60GHz' processor.

It would be best to get one with a minimum of 1024Mb of RAM (memory) and at least a 80Gb Hard Drive. A 15" screen and go for the higher capacity battery option (usually £11 - £23 extra).

At the moment you can get the above laptop for £500 (code N04646) with Vista Home Premium.

Are you wanting to play graphically intensive games ?

If so have a look at (code N04643XP) at a cost of £564, this is the same as above apart from a bigger hard drive (120Gb) and a better graphics card a '256MB nVidia GeForce Go 7300'. It also comes with XP Professional instead of Vista.

If you go to the Dell site via Quidco you will save 4% of the net price before VAT.

Vista or XP, difficult to say. XP has been around for several years and is proven to be stable. Vista is new, potentially better and the future, but it is not yet proven to be stable. It is a 6 and two 3's, some people will choose XP, some will choose Vista. Vista appears to require more memory.

NB: Don't buy the cheaper Inspirion 1501, the 'AMD® Turion 64 X2 Mobile' processors are dual core, but they are very slow relative to the 'Intel Core 2 Duo' processors. It would quickly become a false economy. You will want your Laptop to be fast enough to give you 5 years service.

Thanks so much for your advice!!!

I will check out the dell website and take the plunge!! I am wireless from tuesday with my internet so cant wait for a new laptop.

i would not bother with vista tbh, im a microsoft qualified systems engineer and i don't even like it , xp does everyting you could need , vista can be very funny with older programs , if everything you buy is vista certified to run on it then go for it, if not stick with xp, i would not recommend vista to any of my customers as yet, if you want more specific reasons just pm me ,
