well thought i would update this.

got going and getting great speeds, with virgin I was getting 9mb, now I'm getting 24mb  funny how Virgin said my line could only handle what I was getting, just hope the 24mb stays around that speed after it settles down.

now for the bad news, got a little problem, and have been on the phone for help and been to t-mobile-orange- and EE and no one knows what the heck is going on, they keep asking for my dongle number and mobile sim number
  • Only another 18 months of problems to go then.Glad you are getting those speeds, are they like that on an evening

You are talking to the mobile broadband people, you need the ADSL lot.
BTW Can't find the offer you have anywhere can you provide a link?

Yeah I knew that but they kept putting me through to the wrong person and even after I made it quite clear in was a home BB landline broadband issue they would still ask me for my mobile BB details, which I don't have, I first spoke with a Canadian, then a scotish guy then a lovely lady from Wales and each time I was thining thank god it's an English speaking call centre but only to be hitting my head against a brick wall, the Welsh lady after 30 mins of asking for my mobile details etc realised she was not able to help, put me through to...India, to cut a long story short (2 hours) I ended up solving the problem my self whilst the guy was asking his boss for help.

here is a link to the deal, if you are not a customer of either Orange or T-mobile, just buy/get a payg sim for the deal.

it's a 12 month contract (I think) and as the price of 16.50 is only £1 more than I would be paying for a BT phone line I am willing to take the risk, upto now, the speeds have improved on Virgin so I am very happy.

oh and the speed is as they quoted me before the service began, 14mb, I was using the uswitch BB speed tester but have since realised the results were wildly out, I was getting figures of 24-44 and 88mb, I have since used the speed test on here (seems the best one I have found) and another 2 I found and all 3 have been giving me the same result of around 14mb, and nearly exactly 1mb upload speed, which is a good 5mb better than what I was getting.
(phone call problem I can forgive them for if the service stays as it is now)

I will keep the thread updated on the speeds I am getting but I think the norm is to wait a 10 day period for the line to stabilize before you get a true idea what speeds you will be getting but I will still keep checking, starting this evening.

I was knackered today so was in bed for 8.30 so couldn't check, but the afternoon speeds were consistantly 14mb.

Thanks, looks like a good offer.
If you want to monitor your true connection speed its a good idea to look at you routers line statistics.
You'll need to log on to the router and look for connection details.
You can find info on this here.

Look towards the back of the leaflet.

    thanks

this seems to be the best but I use 2 others just to check I'm getting the same results

    http://www.moneysupermarket.com/broadband/tools/speed-test/

    these 2 are good too

    http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/

    http://www.speedtest.net/

you need to run the test a couple of times to get an average, as the speeds are slightly up and down, each time you run it, so you see the average.

Just to add I have checked the speeds throughout today and all have been around 14mb so looking good.

just check with EE what speeds are likely on your line before you go ahead as you might be getting the max for your line now, some lines are really slow if a long way away from the exchange etc

As said EE told me I would likely get 14mb if I moved to them and true to their word my speeds are around 14mb.
