  • So strange as talking about pikelets with my auntie and sister on Saturday night!! Anyhow if you live near Derby then there is a pikelet store in the market (not in the Westfield shopping centre but the other covered market). His stall is to the back and the smell is to die for. He makes them fresh and think they were £1.50 for 4 (but wouldn't swear on it). They were still warm when we bought them but was good and waited till we got home then toasted them and smeared butter and jam on.

Me thinks a trip to Derby is called for now ;-)

I've been looking for them for years since they disappeared from the shelves at M & S. Went to our local garage with a small M & S food dept and there they were tonight :D

Pack of six 95p, not cheap but how I've missed them. Got 3 packs :D so will it be supper or do I wait for breakfast hmm. Hope they are as nice as I remember.

Anyone else missed them as much as I have ?
  • Not often I say i'm thankful for living in a rather grim part of the midlands..

But, we have an abundance of "proper" pikelet and oatcake shops

Well Ive never even heard of them so a little looking around for the recipe threw up lots but after many sites I found this one which is also a west midlands based one - gonna try this sometime this week they look lush and inexpensive to make.

Aren't pikelets and crumpets the same thing? What I used to call Pikelets in Coventry are called crumpets in Wales

    I was a Coventry Kid.

Back then pikelets were definitely what I now know as crumpets.

(What I now call rolls were batches - and still are named thus by friends still living in Coventry.)

    No.
    Pikelets recipe here:

    Edmonds Pikelet Recipe

    1 Egg
    1/4 cup sugar
    3/4 cup Milk (about)
    1 cup Flour
    1 tsp Edmonds Baking Powder
    1/4 tsp salt
    25g (1 oz) butter optional

Beat the egg and sugar until thick and add with the milk to the sifted flour, salt and baking powder. Lastly add melted butter. Mix until smooth and cook in spoonfuls on a hot greased girdle.

Why on earth would you buy them? Cost: next to nothing.

To me, pikelets and crumpets are the same look - with the holes on top. Pikelets are round-cornered rectangle 'fingers' and crumpets are round.

Scotch pancakes have a smooth(er) surface on both sides and often contain other things, like sultanas.

Thanks for the link, I'm going to give them ago. Have loads of dried yeast that OH won't use for his breadmaking now he prefers the fresh yeast.
There seems to be so much confusion as to what people perceive them to be. Scotch pancakes also known as drop scones or as my mum used to call them when we were kids elephant ears are completely different but just as yummy. Especially with chopped bacon in the mix or for a sweet alternative dried fruit and spice or apple.
