VW Polo 1.4CL 1996

Hi,

I start a new job in just over a week and it is one where I need to drive to/from there on a daily basis and there is no public transport that goes near the place of work from where I live.

My VW Polo power steering stopped working the other week because it is leaking the CHF (power steering fluid) from the pump.

I've been quoted £75 plus VAT from a local mechanic for a used part and then about £100 for labour to fit it and its simply something I can't afford.

Does anyone know where I'd be able to get a power steering pump any cheaper?

Thanks

With the car being so old, does the power steering still work when there is fluid in it? If so, I'd try the bodge first and see how it goes, go to your local factor, or Halfords if you must, and buy some power steering stop leak.

Hi, the power steering works when the fluid is in but it pours out very fast rather than a gradual leak so I don't know if the stop leak would solve the problem.

EDIT: Stop leak only says its for oil/petrol leaks as well so I don't think this is any good for power steering leak

No need to be like that, its Friday morning not Monday morning :p

I've found the right stuff this time around but it says in the listing:

Can be added to all conventional power steering oils meeting Dexron II or III, Ford, LHM or equivalent specification

Now as you can tell I haven't really got much of a clue about engines but I know that my VW oil spec is Central Hydaulic oil G 002 000. So I don't have a nelly at whether or not the stop leak is compatitable with my car.

Unfortunately thats only for ATF fluid models......VW made mine akward and gave me CHF.
  • Try these for a used part http://www.find-a-part.com/c2o-1/new/pl_full.asp?gclid=CMr9yMDcsLMCFSHHtAodHyEAzg
I've used them a few times and always got a good deal. Bought a complete power steering rack for £38 posted last year.

Is the fluid actually leaking just from the pump?

I ask because I had a golf a few years ago, power steering fluid was leaking and it was a new steering rack that was required.

I would check the rack as well, because if the fluid is leaking from here, this can also damage the pump when there is no fluid in to be pumped.

Personally, I would say that if the leaks are that bad they are draining the system, the only way to stop it will be to replace the faulty parts.

Dont use stop leak.. Waste of time unless its the odd drip.

Ebay or scrapyard for a 2nd hand part. £12 or less for a haynes manual and £20 for a set of spanners.

I've got a haynes manual on the way to me from ebay in the next few days.......tried slick 50 today but the leak is too bad for a stop leak like you said it was a waste of time.

Trouble is I start a new job in a weeks time and I need to drive to/from it and I don't have a clue about engines so even with the manual I don't think I'll know how to replace it safely.
