    Forget the idiots on here.

Why don't you try to purchase your shopping online and have it delivered. Your card may work online as the rules differ between Cardholder present and cardholder not present type transactions?

If you dont like Britains rules, Dont stay here simple.

We use chip and pin to try and prevent fraud or customers disputing payments with banks, Non like argentina which is full of scams.

What a load of racist rubbish.

What would you say if you visited a foreign country and your valid and legal UK card was rejected everywhere because of a different technical standard? I don't think you would be as accepting of that situation. You'd probably rightly complain about foreign companies refusing to abide by international agreements.

VISA and MC are international systems and any valid card should be accepted anywhere, with the possible exception of some fully automated machines used in a self-service mode.

The issue is mostly down to staff training, and staff "playing safe" by refusing anything out of the ordinary. Any rejections should be challenged at the company's Head Office.

If you drew fuel or ate a meal at an establishment displaying a VISA / MC logo, then offered payment with a valid card from another country, you gave fulfilled your side of the bargain. The company would have no option other than to accept it (or else lose out completely).

  • I don't know what happens at ASDA, but in Sainsbury's self-service tills, if you swipe and sign, the till locks up and calls a member of staff over who then visually compares the signature on your card with that which you've signed on the receipt.

I've done this before even though my card is Chip+Pin. Sometimes when putting the card into a chip+pin reader it will say "Use swipe" on the screen.
  • I've always found that it helps to simply tell them that its a foreign card that needs to be swiped generally gets even the most inexperienced cashier to try it. As I understand it, every retailer is meant to be able to do it as a part of their merchant agreements, but sometimes they have to obtain managerial authority to let the transaction go through.

The problem with online is many sites don't like an overseas billing address and a UK delivery so results in frequent declines.

We have been through this all before. France had the first generation of Chip cards, and Brits were met with a shrug when they tried to pay. Many firms dislike signature verification (even with a Chip & Sig cards) and will discourage it, irrespective of their Merchant Agreement.

As far as the OP is concerned, he Is stuffed until his bank replace with Chip versions, but what a great way to save money - a Merchant-declining Visa card!

Absolutely nothing racist about that whatsoever. Though there are blatantly obvious xenophobic undertones throughout the entire thing, and as I'm sure you're well aware (whether you agree with it or not), the term racism is used interchangeably with the term xenophobia nowadays. Which as I don't think either is "worse" than the other, I personally have no issue with.

Perhaps I should have used xenophobic and arrogant instead of "racist"; for which you have my humble apology.

    The part where you said

    sounds xenophobic to me.

If you think we are immune to scams in the UK you haven't been reading enough on these forums, for example this one:

    There are many others.

    Why arrogant?

Well, your apparent view that companies in the UK should be able to ignore international card agreements freely entered into, which are designed to facilitate the free movement of people, funds and goods and increase trade; and that's perfectly okay as long as it doesn't cause any nuisance to British people, shows quite stunning arrogance.

Many people who know me would be in hysterics to find that I was now considered "a liberal".

  • They don't have to take your card if they don't want to.

I work in retail and can't take cards without a chip. If you argued, you'd be evicted by Security. Can't be doing with people whining about nothing.
