With a plastic end a static charge cant jump, I dont see any use in your post.

Firstly a "static charge jump" is dependant on the conductivity of the air gap not the material charged, you can easily get a charge build up and spark from plastic. Secondly your post made no sense to me but I didn't question the point in posting it.

Hey Mr big post count your talking rubbish because you obviously have no understanding of physics now shall we carry on or will you be quiet?

No need to be rude and personal. I was simply disputing your statement. Argue sensibly with my statements, that's fine but why insult me? Plastic is actually easier to build up static charge in the first place. As for my understanding of physics, my research background is actually mostly in plastic electronics.

I didnt want to start an arguement with my post, was only saying my dh uses the dyson with attachments all the time, has never had an electric shock, but he also tests his motherboards on the table not in the case and switched on:eek:

It's ok you're not the one being rude. My first post was "they can generate an awful lot of static and possibly therefore end up damaging the components." I didn't say it would definitely damage components just that it's more risky.

Oh well I gave every opportunity to be civil and nice. Can't believe I wasted so much time trying to be civil to such a rude individual.
    Static shocks from vacuum cleaners:

    Simple explanation of static charges:
    http://www.electrostatics.com/page2.html

At the risk of bringing this thread back to the point, I’m just an electrical engineer so deal with real volts rather than these strange static things.

Static builds up on insulators and can be caused by air movement (see some of the sparks that come off composite helicopter blades at night). The problem arises when the charged article (plastic hoover bit) touches something conductive and discharges. If the conductive bit is part of a computer then it could be damaged.

Solution….use a hoover with a metal attachment and hold the metal bit in your hand. This will give any static a path to bleed to earth (through you).

Having said this I have been cleaning computers for years with a plastic hoover without any problems. One thing I always do is rest a finger on any fan to stop the air flow making it spin too fast (although again I’m not sure if I need to do this but can’t see that it can do any harm)

Which is also why I believe you're probably pretty safe using a portable vacuum, the much lower power and hence lower air flow will reduce the effect of charge build up.

I'm an nanoelectronic engineer myself so I tend to work at the opposite end to you in terms of voltage :D  Although I do vaguely remember lectures on something called power lines, phases, power factors etc ;)

thanks all - some good stuff there.

Been cleaning away now for several days and PC looks good.
