Postage undercharged. Would you?

Whilst mum was here she got me looking for some items.
One was close to finishing so we put a bid in and won.

Item was listed as parcel post, But changed that to 1st class delivery and paid for the item.
This was at the weekend. Parcel arrived the following friday.

So took them a few days to post it. It's for xmas so not a problem.

Now the trouble starts..

Got an email asking for more money towards postage.

We didnt notice when we paid they charged less for 1st class than parcel post. And their postage charge was more than they charged for parcel post.

So they are way down. On postage.

Gave the box to my mum unopened and she is not impressed with the state of some of the items. Bit grubby. Pen marks on them which need scrubbing off.

So we underpaid postage the stated postage because they messed up.
The actual postage was a lot more than that.
But the items are not quite as expected. But should cleanup.

Ignore them? Reply saying items were dirty so no?

Pay half the postage? Pay them the original parcel post figure?

Or pay for the full postage cost?

Ebay and 3rd parties are a PITA.

Thanks :)

As someone else suggested the other day to basically the same question... Just say that you paid what you were willing to pay INCLUDING the postage and that if you'd know the postage cost was going to be higher you wouldn't have bid as high.

Sale is done and finished now. You've had your item, they've had their money.

If they messed up they'll have to swallow it. Bit cheeky of them to even ask really.

    I'd just ignore.

Well i had a parcel i received yesterday, the postage was £5.60 (or there abouts, 1st class packet) but i paid £4.50 for 'tracked' postage according to the listing.
The seller sent me a message saying that they had under estimated postage and that they had sent it 1st class standard instead of recorded as the postage would have been over £6 for recorded (i only paid £7.50 inc postage costs). No mention of me paying extra, however i ignored the message (after all its not my responsibility to check what the item would actually cost to post) and just left pos feedback and 5* across the board.
  • It's unfair of them to come back to you and ask you to pay the difference. I have on occasion under charged for postage also. I've just under estimated what it would cost - but that isn't the buyers fault. They should swallow the cost and make it a lesson for next time. I certainly wouldn't be giving them any extra money, expecially if the goods weren't as described.
  • So we underpaid postage the stated postage because they messed up.

So are you saying you did not pay the listed price for postage and purposely underpaid it?

Surely it is not down to you to decide what to pay. If you have an issue with the item then you go through the proper channels with a dispute. You don't just pay what you like.

Sure they have no basis to ask for more money if they screwed up on postage but by underpaying what you should have done you're risking having any comeback anyway.

I think they're saying the seller undercharged for the selected postage service.

I bought an item freepost and the seller then wanted £15 as he forgot to charge for parcel force. I have pointed them in the direction of a cheap courier (who have messed them around all week :o) - but no way was i paying more.

What a cheek! No way should you pay the extra!

I came unstuck with understated postage costs a few years ago, but never once did I ask people to cough up extra money! That was MY fault for underestimating! lesson learnt.. have since bought some digital scales and now always weigh and check on royal mail for costs.

As someone else has said, would you have bought the item if the postage was higher anyway?

Shame on the seller for sending you grubby penmarked items too... you say they will come off? Well, If they couldn't be bothered to get them off before sending, then I certainly wouldn't be bothered about paying them any more for postage!

Yeah, I got this bit but when they said 'So we underpaid postage the stated postage because they messed up' right after saying it arrived grubby I thought they were saying they decided to not pay the full amount because of this.

You've already paid the agreed amount so you're not obliged to pay any extra.
