Jem - nice to hear from you again, was thinking of you the other day. Sorry to hear about the finances, you'll get through somehow and we will be rooting for you too.

2T - ouch with your shoulder. Hope the appointment goes well next week.

kidcat - glad you had a well deserved fun day!

katie - hugs to you love. You sounded a little brighter yesterday, hope so. Will be thinking of you on Thurs but won't be here to post. I am on my course all day on Thurs, then as soon as I'm back, DH has to go to college so will hardly even see each other.

I remember splitting up my ex on Vals Day. He took frugality too far to the point of meaness. One birthday he bought me clothes 2 sizes too small in a sale (his idea to buy clothes) and then I couldn't exchange them or get a refund - and he got the hump about it!! DH is one of the most unmaterialistic people I know, he is generally frugal as once survived on a tiny income for years but he would give anyone in real need his last penny to help them.

Shegar - hope your happy memories are some comfort to you. Can you make some special food to share with DH or buy some flowers you can both enjoy or similar?

Eliza - what a lovely gesture from your DM, that's beautiful.

Well its DH's birthday today. None of his family have sent a card - not his mum, sis, bro or aunt, not a single burger. I am so cross inside but am trying to make up for them all. Presents from me and boys, homemade cards from boys, an enormous homemade choc cake from me and we are all going out to lunch later (been saving a little bit for weeks)

off to give birthday boy his gifts etc now. have a good day all

morning everyone, SQ hope your OH has a lovely day with his closes family, you and your boys. The homemade cards sound very special.

I was woken up by my husband putting the washing away at 730am. I was quite happy asleep, and then he started hoovering the lounge. The word anal springs to mind, as it is the only true day i get a lay in. He is up early as he has man cold flu. He refused the flu jab last year with the saying real men dont need it, bet he wishes he had now.

We are going to visit friends later in newmarket, it is DD fiance parents. We try and meet up at least once a month. We have lunch at their house as eating out would be very expensive. This will be the first year we are not all going on holiday together. We are hopeing to plan to go on holiday in 2 years time, as ii expect as things are it will take that long to save up. Well as long as no major events take place!!

well im off for a long soak in the bath, and to avoid oh washing the kitchen floor - it is temping to paddle through it when hes done just for annoyance sake.

    Take care everyone x

  • Modern pain killers are wonderful things...I slept like a log and woke up at ten thirty, unheard of for me as I am usually out of bed early desperate for my breakfast lol

Shoulder feels much better this morning and I can move it easier. I will keep the sling on for the week though like they told me to do. I got a tip off the internet about sleeping with it raised on a pillow at the injured side and it worked great. It really took all the pain off and felt relaxing.
The hailstorm we had last night (four inches of hail that settled) was still there seven hours later! It is now sunny and bright but its absolutely perishing out there. Not planning on going anywhere..what with my shoulder and OH's back playing up we are like a pair of old crocks lol

Good luck in the nasty weather coming your way folks, stay warm and thank you very much for all the good wishes about my shoulder...they worked great!

Hugs for everyone that needs them. Hoping the weather doesn't turn out too nasty!

Am really struggling at work at the moment - one woman is just so negative and switches between nice and nasty so quickly. Leaves me feeling quite unsettled and picked at. Keep thinking that I should figure out what I want to do ..... not many jobs around here though. I feel daft too as some days I really dread going and feel sick at the thought of it but there are so many people without jobs.

Maybe some voluntary work would help. I am really drawn to working with / caring for people but don't have any job experience. Just 10 plus years in my home life. Might be good to volunteer in a care home - not sure if I would need qualifications though.

How do people figure out what they want to be?! I am 26 and STILL don't know what I want to be when I grow up!

I can relate to all that you say AJ and I am much older than you...also for those that work we may be coming to the idea in this country of working a four day week and having three days off. An african country has started to introduce this and the other night I heard a report showing that some countries in europe are already doing this and have for years...

It doesn't mean everyone is off at the same time just that some may work Mon-Fri and others may work Sat-Tues or other combinations...you'd work the same amount of hours but I think having something like this would be great.

Hate people like that woman, I have had a few jobs where people have made my life hell... Hugs. It's one of the reasons I vowed I'd never set foot back in an office.

Not sure about volunteering in a care home? You'd probably need a CRB check? Why not a charity shop that supports something you believe in (or maybe a food bank!)

I know what I want to be when I grow up, and I have done for some time:

:)Angel Jenny, I'm 20+ years older that you and still haven't decided what I want to be when I grow up. I have, through the process of elimination, decided against a few options. And I'm a Jedi Knight, for the purposes of the Census..........:rotfl:

I've done voluntary work and I have to say found it an excellent way of testing the waters for a change of direction and a great way of easing into the workforce if you've been out of circulation for whatever reason. It gives you a chance to test yourself and see what works for you, to gather experience (and references!) and opens doors. One of my voluntary jobs led to paid employment that lasted for a few years until funding dried up.

One of the things employers look at is what you can bring to the table in terms of life-skills and experiences. I'm sure most of us will have encountered someone in a workplace who was good at his/ her job but such a toxic individual that they spread dissent and chaos all around them. It's not just doing your job, it's getting along with all sorts of people, and volunteering can widen your experience.

It also shows posiitivity and commitment, that you weren't laying in bed until midday before filling in a few applications. About 70% of jobs are never advertised, so it really helps to get yourself out there and show what you can do.

    Besides, it's fun.

Ive still no idea what I want to be when I grow up or if I actually want to grow up.

It's been cold and drizzly here all day but has now started snowing horizontally and blizzardy, we're supposed to have 10cm tonight so I think we may have to rescue DD1 from work early, the only access out of the village is via a steep hill and it gets closed very quickly in bad weather. She's due to finish at 10pm so will keep an eye on things.

Was telling DH about the sort of old glazed bookcase I wanted to find to use in the rustic part of my kitchen renovation, he said his parents had one at some point but we could go hunting for one next week. Popped to his parents for coffee this morning and out of the blue his Mum asked if i wanted a shelf, I said I'd have a look and see if it was useable and low and behold its the glazed bookcase! Spooky but fortuitous, it's just the right size and shape and will be given a new lease of life here.

Fire is burning away with a full compliment of kitty warmth hoggers so I'm going to make a pot of tea and crack on with some sewing.
