This is no longer the case Meme, not sure when it changed but when I checked you now only get NI contributions paid until your youngest child (who you receive CB for ) reaches 12 - this seems to have been changed a while back yet many people do not know apparently.

    Taken from the hmrc page
How to get National Insurance credits
You'll get National Insurance credits automatically in some situations. If you don't, you'll need to apply for them.
Qualifying automatically for National Insurance credits
You'll get National Insurance credits automatically:
if you're getting certain benefits like Employment and Support Allowance or Carer's Allowance
if you are a man approaching age 65 - see the section 'National Insurance credits in different situations'
for the tax years when you become 16, 17 and 18, if you meet the conditions - see the section 'National Insurance credits in different situations'
if you're getting Child Benefit for a child under 12
if you're receiving Income Support and caring for a sick or disabled person
You can find out more about qualifying for credits in the section above on National Insurance credits in different situations.

However I am seeing new bits on other areas which suggest the age of the child may be dropped to 6

Just to add, you get Child Benefit (without an NI credit) until your child leaves further education such as college but this does not include Advanced Education ie a degree or equivalent
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

Brilliant my friend, and a puttytat too, what is his name and does he lay in front of the fire? How lovely that you now have a new friend, Lyn xxx.

He's Polo, see my avatar, he has watched the fire with interest! :) At the moment he's upstairs, seems to like it up there.

Afternoon everyone! Well I've done the deed. They were all having a big flap about something that had just kicked off when I went in. So I caught the eye of one of the trustees (who I'd just told why I was leaving) and pointed to my letters and uniform on the side and slipped out. They all knew I was going anyway, so presume the big boss had spread the word. I'm feeling quite calm, and laughed a lot of the way home, because what had kicked off was writ large to me anyhow :) I won't bore you with the details, but useless manager got a flea in her ear from someone!

Market went well for me this morning after a slow cold start, was terribly quiet for the other traders though.

Got a bit of food left though, just had spicy carrot soup with yoghurt and one of my spinach and feta puff pastry slices for lunch.

Going to take the dogs out now...and then clean everything up!

I am 60 this year, a year I expected to retire back when I paid increased NIC when married (you could opt to pay a reduced rate)...I will at the current calculation now retire in March 2017. I will have 45 NIC years by then. (I miss out by one month because of my birth year)

My health is not great, sometime, without being morbid, I wonder how I will keep on working. Not only that, as it's March 2017 will the new changes apply to me or not? I have no idea what would be better or worse. I suspect, as it always seems to be the way, it will be worse.

I appreciate that things have to change, but I also believe women of my generation are the ones that miss out considerably because of 1) the promises/expectation that were made (I did not add further to my pension because of family commitments, and instead concentrated on my ex's pension) and b)not being given enough time to do anything about the changes, which have been so recent. Women statistically are poorer in retirement.

Having said all that, I am trying to be philosophical and not expend negative energy thinking about what might have been. But nonetheless it makes me angry.

Byatt I have to agree with you regarding women of our generation. I believe that we have been targeted to bear the brunt of many of the changes. It's like we're constantly having to play catch-up -with little time to actually make anything up financially. In very few years we have had our pension age changed twice, had the number of qualifying years changed three times. Nothing is certain, this could all change again. It is impossible to make provison for the future when they keep changing it. As for simplifying the State Pension, I have just read an article (link posted by Popperwell:) thank you) and if anything the situation is becoming more confused. Not everyone will get this Pension and there are various complicated measures, particularly around the transistion period. I certainly don't believe I will ever receive what I thought I was promised 40 odd years ago when I elected to pay the full married women's contribution.

Off to the vet now with a poorly doggie. She has to have her annual jabs, but has really sore ears. I dread the bill -but she's worth it.

I'd like to say thanks to you guys on here for chatting about pensions, because it triggered a distant memory for me that I'd been sent a NI bill for my self employed contributions :o I can't find it, but I've just called them, and I hadn't imagined it... they are sending me a replacement! But if you'd not be talking about such stuff would have slipped my mind!

katie - well done you :)

My father has only just received the state pension, he's 65 now. He doesn't receive the full amount and is struggling as he has to pay part of rent and council tax. He also works part time to cope with the cost of living.

To be honest i very much doubt they will even be a state pension for those aged 45 and under. At the moment its 68yrs but i can't see it staying that, probably rise to 75 or more in 2050.So who knows what our future will old.

Benefits wise my partner won't claim dla for ds2 and he won't let me put a claim in for dla either as he thinks i'll give up. Also its stress of going through it all.
Pops is very lucky regarding his house, my father is having to pay extra to keep his 2 bed house going. My biological mother can't afford to pay the extra rent for the spare room she has. So either she has to find a two bed house for her and my little brother. Or a 1 bed flat / house and lil bro has to find his own place to live.
We don't know how it affects us yet as we have a 3 bed house but can only qualify for a 2 bed rate and thats not full rent.
Its just a case of waiting and seeing.

Benefits i do think they needs to be some reform as the system is flawed. For example you shouldn't have to wait 6 months for your claim of JSA to be settled. If it wasn't for child benefit and child tax credit we'd have starved. But i also know a lot of people who claim dla and don't need it, while others who have tried and should claim dla can't get it because they haven't played up enough during health checks. So something needs to be done but not to the extent the government is saying.

Had ds2 off school today, he slept, while wept most of the night in our room. By 8am he fell asleep on OH's lap and didn't wake up till nearly 11am. Poor thing still has an earache but its better than it was, so back to school tomorrow i think.

OH has been out all day for work, he didn't get back till 9 last night, so another long day. At least he's has some work coming in so its all good.

The snow keeps coming and going. Looks so nice though, just a shame the rain comes a little and starts to melt it a little. Can't stand ice.

    Hello everyone :)

I'm of the camp that also believe that bt the time I reach pensionable age there will be no state pension. I save for my pension which is next to nothing right now but I feel I have to save something until my income increases. I also fully expect to be still working at 70.

Speaking if which. How is this for s*ds law? Today is the deadline for UCAS university applications and BT have been unable to connect my broadband because of cabling problems. There's no way I'm going to attempt to do it via the phone so will have to miss and hope my application will still be valid. Still waiting on whether my qualifications are relevent but the lady I spoke to today said apply anyway as its not always cut and dry what they will accept as appropriate especially with mature students with vocational experience. I can but try although severely narked of I'm honest.

I've written to my old boss head teacher to ask if he'll submit a reference for me.

Lifts on the school run today and tomorrow too as the snow that's fallen is expected to freeze nastily over night. Little saxo is ready to be collected when the cheque has cleared but to be honest I can't drive it the state of the roads at the minute. I need practise, not being thrown in the deep end with icy conditions.

I checked the deposit scheme today and old LL still has not submitted his evidence for the dispute. I'm not sure what the procedure is after 14 days answer be honest I've been on the phone to BT and Talk Talk for a lot of the day. I really can't be arissed to call another call centre right now.

But all is well, nothing to worry about. Just a frustrating day.

Stay safe out there. Extremely cold over night and in the morning. Mind your step on the ice.

I may still struggle Kezlou...well I know that I will. It depends on whether I continue to receive what I do now but again the person who saw me from the housing association said there is little if any smaller property to move into and that my present location is better for me.

And when my finances change regarding Mum's savings I will be paying the full amount for a short period of time...it looks a lot on paper but I reckon even if very careful it will not last long and I have been told as much and then to ask for help again...

Lots of unknowns for now and in the long term...wishing you and yours well.

Of course DLA is being phased out and the replacement is worrying many...even the disabled sportswoman who champions the disabled Tanni Grey Thompson has concerns...

    Worrying times for all...
