Feeling ungrateful.. what would you do?

Hi Guys,

At the beginning of the Oct we I won VIP tickets to Disney on ice at the NIA... which was today.

The VIP bit means that the kids should have gone on a boat ride on the ice as part of the prize.

Anyway we got there today, picked our tickets up from the box office and sure enough they said 'boat trip' in the corner. We had amazing seats right next to the ice. The boat came out and the kids got really excited... but the boat went to the other side of the ice and put other kids in and that was it my 4 year old was crying his eyes out and my 6 year old wasn't much better :( .. I guess I shouldn't have told them just in case.

At the interval I asked a member of staff if that should have been us and they said yes and that there had been a terrible mistake and that we should have actually had seats on the other side of the ice - even though the seats we were in matched our tickets. They said that when they couldn't find us children were selected from the audience. They were very apologetic and took our tickets and said they would get a goodie bag for the children instead... but didn't come back!!! We waiting around for a bit after the performance, but then decided to go and we could see the member of staff that went off with our tickets anywhere.

Now at home with 2 very deflated kids!

Should I complain or am I being ungrateful as we have had a free day out?

Personally I would complain, as you were promised something that you didn't get. OK you had a lovely day out but it's like if you were told you'd won £5000 and then the cheque arrived and it was for £3000! Still nice, but not what you were expecting! I would ring the venue and ask for a manager, explain what happened and how devastated your kids were to miss out on the boat ride, and ask what they are going to do to put it right. Good luck!

Yes I to would complain. Your kids have been disappointed not once but twice regardless if it was a win or not! It was a day that should have been magical but will be remembered for all the wrong reasons.

I would write to the promoter and the competition sponsor, in a non confrontational manner. Just pointing out what happened and how upset the children were. Also how the children were offered a goody bag as compensation for the organiser's error which were not forthcoming.

Hope you get some recompense :)

  • I do not see why you cannot tell then that despite having a wonderful day the children were very upset to have missed the boat ride and then were promised a goody bag to try and make amends but that did not materialise either. I think the nicer you are the more likely you are to receive a positive reply.
    Good luck

I wouldnt use the word 'complaint' I would just write a nice letter letting them know how disappointed your children were and that you did indeed speak to a staff member who promised a goodie bag and you never saw them again.

You'll get a lot furhter if it is a nice letter.

good luck with it. Let us know how you get on please.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Agree with what McKneff has said.

I can imagine your children being dissapointed. I have 3 boys and I know for a fact mine would have been gutted . Hope the children get some sort of goody bag as promised
  • Thanks everyone,

My other half was giving me daggers for speaking to chap in the interval, so I thought I may have been being a bit OTT.

I've drafted a very carefully worded email and certainly haven't used the word 'complaint'.

Will let you know how I get on.

McKneff said it for me too really. In fact I would go further and write a letter of thanks, but add something like the only thing that dampened it was... and then add your bit. I'll be surprised if they don't at least send a goodie bag. Fings crossed for you :)

I hope the boat trip on ice is forthcoming, because that is what the children will remember.
