Lots of people have had bad experiences with M&S hiking prices up. Some people feel they're pricing themselves out of the market, which is why many prefer to stick with companies that deal in insurance as their sole/main business Axa, Petplan (premiums are generally higher initially but yearly rises pretty low/reasonable), etc.

That being the case, can anyone tell me which companies do give the same level of cover please? I am going to do some more research but obviously it would help if anyone can tell me which ones definitely offer this cover.

Don't go with Sainsburys, my dog is 9 and has two ongoing conditions for which he needs tablets. His insurance has shot up after the last renewal from £65.04 to £130.48 a month!!!!!!

A friend of mine has just lost her dog but she was with Petplan, it had had numerous expensive ops for cancer had had £750 worth of acupuncture, on constant expensive pain killers, was 13 yo at last renewal and she still only paid around £600 a year, mine works out at £1500+ per year.

Axa is 7k per condition per year so you will be covered 7k every year for each problem.

No claims for my cat and was £8.50 ish per month first year and now year 3 it's £10.43 per month.

You can set the excess from 3 or 4 options (I am at £50) which lowers/raises the premium.

No % of bill to pay on top either like alot of insurers do now.
  • If your pet is young you can use Quidco to get very good cash back each year by swapping. But if your pet develops an illness you may have to stick with an expensive option. Also remember if you swap the first couple of weeks will have limited cover so its best to overlap if you intend to swap.

Top quidco offers at the moment
    Sainsburys £85 cash back
More than £65 cash back and 25% off.

  • Thank you all for such useful info, have got two 3 year old cats and just had renewal. Am with Argos, the underwriters have changed and my male cats insurance has gone up from £11 to £20! Had no claims this year but previously he had an eye infection. When I rang Argos to query this they said it had gone up because they would cover previous conditions.

Help! This is where I get confused.........does anyone know if this means were I to change insurers they wouldn't cover "anything" to do with his eye even if it was not an infection? Hope that makes sense!

Have been on comparison sites and can get insurance for him for £12. I love my cats to bits but this insurance thing is quite a minefield......any comments would be useful.

    Thank you:D

I *think* a new insurer wouldn't cover the same problem, or anything related to that problem - as was explained to me earlier in the thread. My cat had an op to put stitches in a cut. I think if he had another cut he would be covered, but if the first cut didn't heal properly and got infected then that wouldn't be covered because it related to the same incident.

However, I think the safest thing might be to ring a couple of companies and ask them.

I'm going to look into Axa, Petplan and Animal Friends now. Does anyone have any thoughts on these companies please?

Thanks - very interesting reading! I notice in the second link it gives scores for some of the companies and M&S score quite well (94%), but Petplan not so well (81%).

I was concerned when someone earlier in the thread said M&S are well known for increasing their premiums. Mine has gone from approx £7.50 to approx £11.50 on the one we had to make a claim again - but has also increased £2 per month on the one we didn't claim on.

I'm looking to the future and want to be sure whoever I go with is a good company as I'm aware if anything develops in the next 12 months I *could* be with them for life!
