On Monday I got a letter from Dyson about my washing machine.

"We had to cease production ...cost of manufacture
Yes, we were told some time ago that they stopped making them because they weren't cost-effective to make.
But they've still been repairing them.

.....of December 2012 we will no longer be able to supply spare parts
Arrrhhh! This is terrible news. Ours goes wrong about every 18 months or so and Dyson always do a great job. They've been brilliant for us ever since we bought it in 2005.
Interestingly, we bought it from Comet who we had terrible service from.

I mentioned this to a lady I work with as I know that she has a Dyson washing machine & she rang them straight away and had a service done today for about £99.

They replaced the motors, door catch and something else all for that price so she should be good to go for another few years yet (although you never can tell with washing machines!)
  • I paid £99.00 for a repair in Sept 2012, and Dyson issued a 2 year guarantee.

The 'Dear John' letter must render this null and void.

Had I known (I contend Dyson must have known they were going to pull the plug, when I made the appointment), I would have put the money towards a new machine (honestly, I'm not just saying that as I toyed with whether it was worth having it repaired as the faut was only minor but the fixed £99 fee made it costly).

Funnily enough, the engineer replaced the motor (which was not the original fault that needed repairing) so I wonder if he knew....
  • "Same as you dont need genuine manufacturer car parts for your car and can use OEM parts instead."

OEM (original equipment manufacturer) ARE genuine manufacturer parts! Do you mean non OEM?
  • I too have had the Dear John letter, wondering if I should get a final service before the curtain falls on this wondrous piece of kit.

I had a few problems with mine every couple of years, along came the engineer, fixed it, and updated it, all free of charge for about 5 years. The machine was practically rebuilt, including a new drum, which I waited 18 months for. I didn't complain, I could still use it, just the drum didn't contra rotate. Dyson gave me a re-chargeable hand held vacuum cleaner as an apology. The last couple of call outs I had to pay for, one the engineer didn't charge me for as the fault was so minor.

The after sales service was old fashioned, ie damn good!

Will be really sad when my old faithful dies, but debating getting them out one last time.

We've had a very similar experience, mybow.
We, too, are wondering about one last service from them.
  • I phoned Dyson this morning, apparently there is a management meeting today to discuss the Comet issue. As always, the customer care team were most helpful and informative, as far as they could be. I have booked a final service £99, and hope my beloved machine will go on for ever!!
