Buying a new TV - Advice needed!

Hi All,
After a good 5 year run my trusty tv is about ready to go to the big Currys in the sky so I'm looking at a replacement. At the moment I'm leaning towards a Panasonic VIERA TXL42DT50B
(http://www.richersounds.com/product/tv---all/panasonic/viera-txl42dt50b/pana-txl42dt50b)
But wanted to see if anyone had any better ideas? Main requirements are 42" with good picture quality, will be sat about 8ft away. 3d is a bonus but not a pre-requisite, as is all the Smart-tv stuff. Budget is around £900
Also, is it worth getting it in December or waiting until the January sales? Do tv's tend to get reduced in the sales?
Thanks in advance

I have a older version of the TV below & CANNOT fault it in the slightest! Easy to use, brilliant picture & I can connect my External Hard Drive from my laptop to it & watch programmes, listen to music & look at photo's I have stored on it,I'm also in the process of connecting it to my old desktop PC tower as my router's next to the TV for the Sky box,so I can use it as an external monitor.
I have it also connected via Optical Out to my surround sound system & get brilliant sound via that way.Picture is very good on SD via HDMI.I bought it last June & about a month after I got it,the same was on sale at a ton less!

I'd go for this one if I was to buy a new one. I've got a Panasonic plasma and as long as you aren't watching in a incredibly bright room it's the way to go. Reviews say it's almost as good as the top end Panasonics this year.

I have a Panasonic plasma too - the TXP42C3B with Freeview HD built in.
It was the previous year's model when I bought it so the price was very competetive. I bought it in the Co-op (they price-matched their online store's price of £386).
As with most plasmas, the glass screen makes viewing in a bright room difficult but the picture quality is superb.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
Cheers for the help folks, much appreciated0

I would greatly suggest for you to buy an LED TV as it does not consume a lot of energy (so say hello to low monthly electric bills). Resolution is great too and as far as I know there are promo packages if you buy an LED TV like having a discounted surround sound system, free DVD's etc.
Good luck!0 -
As it is money saving forum I also recommend LED TV rather that Plasma.. Average 40 inch LED TV uses 65-70W, same size Plasma TV 200-300W.
Both Plasma and LED TVs can have Freeview HD built in.0 -

LED backit TV - yes it will use less energy
Resolution is great? It'll be the same (1920x1080) as a 1080p plasma.
GooliesofFire - WRONG. I don't know how much a 40 inch inch LED TV uses, but here are a couple of things - I've never heard of a 40 inch plasma, so you're comparing with 42 inches. Also, my 50 inch, 3 year old plasma uses 225W, so your figures are WAY out of date. Here's a CURRENT 42 inch plasma. 133W on average in use.

This will get you a better picture in my opinion, and definitely better sound.0
