Brand names change ownership all the time for all kinds of different strategic reasons. The story behind the demise of HP beans is a strange one.
Premier Foods used to make HP beans under license from Danone who owned the HP brand name. Heinz purchased the HP brand from Danone (basically an aggressive move to eliminate their main rival, like Coke buying Pepsi then closing down Pepsi) and therefore Premier lost their licence to use the HP brand name. But since Premier still had a massive bean-making infrastructure already in place, they simply carried on making them but under the Branston brand name which they had bought from Nestlé in 2002. However, they were forced to "tweak" the recipe slightly since Heinz had acquired the exclusive rights to the HP recipe along with the brand name.
In my opinion Branston beans are the best beans ever, but I guess it's all down to personal taste.
I presume the tins of HP Beans knocking around in Home Bargains are simply old stock which is being disposed of via outlets who specialise in that kind of thing.

I remember reading that when Ken Morrison brought Safeways, he insisted that HP was served in the restaurants as he prefered the taste to Heinz. I was going to suggest trying Morrison, but the above post makes it clear the reason for its demise!!_____________________________________________

Done Iceland, Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons, Aldi, Lidl,Netto and Asda i am in Chesterfield in Derbyshire and there seems to be a HP shortage.
I even put a search on the internet before Xmas and it was quite funny with a whole website dedicated to the missing beans!
I am not yet that desperate but it's like going on a diet when you can't have it you want it even more lol.
