A Dongle for Occasional use?

Hi

A few times a year, I do a bit of work away from home and I don't have internet access apart for my blackberry. I find surfing on my bb painfully slow and then of course it's a small screen.

I was thinking of getting an IPAd until I discovered their prices and was 'shocked' !

I've got a small laptop I can use and am now thinking of getting a payg dongle - no contract etc. They seemed to be charged by so many MB downloads per month. I'm probably mis-understanding this, but I don't download - I surf for a bit of info - and do my emails.

Found one with Vodafone which is £7.50 per month (no contract) with 500MB of data and free BT Openzone.

Do you think this is OK for me? If I'm just surfing and responding to emails - am I right in thinking I don't have to worry about usage?

Many thanks

Many pubc and McD have free wifi. Also on some mobiles you can tether to your pc and surf the world that way. Think a giffgaff contract may be cheaper by the time you add your 250 mins of calls onto it and 'unlimited' surfing?
  • The places I work are in residential houses - usually away from shops so I can't tap into McD's etc.

My blackberry is on contract and I have unlimited internet - how can I connect my bb internet onto my laptop? Sorry I don't understand?

If you are just using it a few times a year, then you don't want to get stuck with a contract.

Something like a T-Mobile USB modem will be fine for you, as you just pay for the days that you use it. Example here

Otherwise, you can tether your BB to the laptop using the BB Desktop software.
  • I've a 3 mifi unit, which I keep topped up with just a tenner in case I'm anywhere that does not have wifi.

Thanks everyone - I'd never heard of tethering before. I'm with Vodaphone and my phone is a Blackberry Torch.

I've got a little cable which came with the phone that has a USB with it - I thought it was for copying photo's over.

How do I tether exactly - is it easy - I am blonde and very at times!!

I also have a 3 mifi unit. I put a 1Gig sim card in and it is valid for a month. It can be wasteful if you dont use it much during that month.

Is there any way that you can use a mifi unit with "Pay as you go" which is not time-limited? Would be very useful for me.

Yes. Unlock the Mifi and use it with another SIM. Though there are no more unlimited validity SIMs left now that the Vodafone SIM is off the market. Just pay per day or similar.
You can also purchase the THREE data SIMs independently, to save money. Usually around £4.40 for 1GB over one month or £11.50 for 3GB over 3 months.
