We need to replace our 6 year old netgear router which is playing up. However we're due an upgrade to superfast broadband in our area next year. Will we need to change to something other than a router or upgrade to a different router to get superfast broadband? Are we as well to buy the cheapest thing to get us up and running again now because we'll need to buy something else next year.

We use Plusnet if that makes any difference.

Thanks for any help

If you are going Fibre Optic, the company will provide the modem/router.
But if you'd like a good one of your own a Billion 7800N is excellent.
My Mind wanders, if found please return.

Not sure we'll be getting fibre optic, we can't get cable here. We picked up a Belkin Surf N300 earlier but just realised it's not the right version and doesn't have a modem in it, so it'll have to go back. Seemed a pretty limited choice in Comet (distress purchase at 7pm)

It's probably/possibly 'Fibre to the cabinet' aka FTTC which will need a 'cable' type router, which will be supplied free or for a nominal fee from your supplier. A friend upgraded to this with Plusnet and the router was free (paid P&P) AFAIK.

Can't get the phone to work when the router is plugged in. It's back like having dial up again, phone or internet, not both! As soon as you plug the phone in, the broadband drops out with the light flashing orange instead of steady green. Have checked the router out by plugging it in next door to their master socket and it's doing the same thing.

Have tried a different one, not new though.

Phone and router are on different filters

Have tried the router plugged into the master socket, as soon as you plug in one of the phones, the broadband drops out. If the phone is connected and you can get a dial tone, when you plug in the router, the phone won't work.

No just plugged it into their master socket which is what plusnet told me to do. Didn't try connecting it up to anything.
