RBS. Changing a payee reference, does it hold payment up?

I have various Halifax current accounts listed in my payee section in my RBS account. The reference fields were the roll numbers of the accounts.
I decided to change the reference field on one account to remove the roll number and put in something more relevant and easy to identify. (The account number and sort code remained unchanged, it was only the reference field I altered.)
After changing this, I then sent funds to the Halifax account but they haven't appeared. Normally they are there in minutes.
Has changing the reference caused a hold up?

I would have thought that it might make all the difference - the roll number is what enables Halifax to identify the correct account to credit. They now have money with no idea of whose it is - or at least have to look up manually, therefore a delay.0

Roll numbers have been retired completely from Halifax and BOS .
They were always internal and external payments only required the sort code/ account. Therefore any holdup will be with RBS.
What did the screen say when you made the payment or were they standing orders/future dated?I have various Halifax current accounts listed in my payee section in my RBS account. The reference fields were the roll numbers of the accounts.

No, the reference field is for your own info. This is what shows in your payee list.
It's not like sending money to a credit card company and you need your card number as a reference.Herman - MP for all!0 -

Just said the usual 'should be there within 2 hours' or whatever the actual wording was.
I have a vague memory of reading someone on MSE say the first payment sent after a payee has been altered has to go by BACS which is what made me wonder. However there was no indication of this when the payment left my RBS account so I don't know if that is accurate or not.Herman - MP for all!0 -

But IS the A/c number the OP used genuinely theirs? It could still be a centralised clearing ('collection') account that still requires the Roll Number to allocate it correctly? Two of my Accounts I have still quoted the roll number, as the A/c number the credit goes to isn't mine.
It's never safe to tinkle unless you know for sure!0 -
