Banging boiler

Hi all,
I've got a problem that has been going on for a few years now and no-one has been able to offer any sort of suggestion as to why it is happening (apart from a very helpful BG engineer, who said it was an 'installation problem').
Specifically, whenever the hot water is run, no matter whether the CH is on or not, the boiler bangs.
I've used every hot tap in the house to try and see whether this is related to any particular pipe, but it even bangs when I use the tap that is right underneath the boiler!
I've had the heat exchanger replaced, no difference. However, I can run the hot tap for about 20 seconds, turn it off and wait a minute (literally) and then turn it on again and 4 times out of 5, there is no banging.
One other thing, when the hot tap is running, the pressure guage on the boiler fluctuates whether there is bangning or not.
Any ideas what this is and would a new boiler cure it?
Thanks
Andy

Google "Water Hammer" and see what you get.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0

Nothing useful I'm afraid. It isn't when I turn off the tap, it is when the water is running.
Note that it is only when the boiler is heating water to the taps, not when it is heating the radiators.
The heat exchanger is only about 6-12 months old and the problem existed before the replacement was fitted.
Thanks anyway.0 -
"banging boiler" - is that just like a really good boiler?!
(sorry I can't offer anything useful on this but I laughed at the title!)This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
One possible explanation is a loose jumper ....the part which holds the washer inside the tap.
try closing the stopcock ( where your cold water supply enters the house) a quarter turn, then try turning on hot water....is there any improvement?
Are all hot pipes properly supported with clips to the wall at regular intervals?
Are any pipes touching each other near to the boiler.0 -
It doesn't matter which tap I use (even the one directly underneath the boiler that would be for the washing machine) I get the banging no matter what.
Without getting a new boiler, which I doubt would fix this, I have no idea what to do.0 -
any chance of telling us the boiler make & model & i'm guessing it's a combi ??I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.
You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.0 -
It is indeed a combi. I think it is a Worcester Bosch Model 28 (I will find out and update later).
I don't know how old it is, it was already installed when we moved in. The banging only started about a year or two after we'd moved in, so it has developed this fault rather than having it there all the time.0 -
Not clear what you mean by banging is this kettling ? If so the water is boiling in the pipes and it needs a clean out with a descaler0

I laughed too, but I imagined a woman of a certain age, having a little bit of the other... oh err missus!0 -
Sorry OP when my boiler was kettling, (boiling) my pipes banged, could it be that?0
