Just curious as to how far people would be prepared to drive for a job paying £18-19k a year?

It's worth mentioning that the job is shift work. Earlies 6am-2pm and lates. 4pm-midnight.

  • How old are you? What are you normally paid?

If you are young and used to £14k then £19k would be great and well worth commuting for. If you are used to £40k then £19k would be a big step down and I'd be less willing to travel for it.

I'd suggest an hour would not be unreasonable.

There will be no change in the salary. I've been with the company 2.5 years. They are relocating this Spring
  • Depends on what the options are.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.
  • What is your current commute?

  • I'd be prepared to drive 15 miles and would not be preapred to pay parking. I have no public transport near me.

I currently commute a round trip of fourteen miles, the new location will be forty two miles round trip. There's a lot of people at work who are looking for new jobs already. I was interested as to what other people would be prepared to drive for that money. Remember you'll be getting up at 4.30am for an early and not home until after midnight if on a late, nearer 1.00am
  • What would the increase in cost be for you?

As shifts, I would probably be more likely to travel further, especially if you drive. I think at the times that you've mentioned you're unlikely to get caught in rush hour traffic.

I would be more interested in how long it would take, and what the difference in cost would be compared to now.

If it takes considerable longer, and costs considerably more, then you would effectively be taking a pay cut (in terms of disposable income). Unless you are prepared to relocate too? (probably only worthwhile if you LOVE the job, and/or there are realistic prospects in the future to work up-wards and eventually earn more.

Two really, to stay and commute or to try and find a new job nearer. As it's shift work, and wkends it means getting up earlier and getting home later. Bigger impact on family life

30-45mins as a max. If it was a physical job or one that required driving around during the day then probably less but then I get tired easily and I know I couldn't drive home safely after the later shift.

I would'nt have applied for the job in the first place if it was a forty + mile round trip. I estimate it to be an extra seven thousand miles a year roughly. I know if you work in the London area this commute is nothing but london jobs have much higher salaries. I would'nt ever consider relocating for my job
