Sorry to go OT but that's a hell of a targeted jump in net worth in both %age increase and cash terms. Good luck, I hope you get there.

I find that our company uses this 'current climate' as an excuse to freeze wages, even though we have increased our profit every year by around 15-20% for the past 4 years.

Last 3 pay rises I've had have been through changing jobs/company.

Rightly or wrongly, labour is a "market" very little different from any other market. Each one of us has an education, a skill set, and brain/muscle power which we "sell" to an employer at a price.

Clearly this market can be a bit slow to move, since chucking in the towel and possibly moving house for a new job is a non-trivial decision. But employers who treat staff 'unfairly' ultimately run the risk of their better employees handing in their notice. Employees who cannot get a better job with more pay are ultimately admitting or accepting that they are paid more or less correctly.

I had 6 main employers, and so moved 5 times. I just checked up, and found the minimum increase I got be moving was about 25%. It tended to be nearer 40% for the others. We have to understand that those who are unwilling/unable to move, and those who have no particular 'career path' for themselves, are paying a price.

Thanks for the support :) although I must admit that I got the year wrong and hadn't noticed. The target is for 2013 :o for exactly the reasons you suggest; if it was for this year I'd be forced to consider a gambling or robbery based strategy to have any chance ;)

I don't for the same reason that I don't refer to all the fruit I have in the house as oranges :p it's a clearly defined term so if you want to use it use it for what it means not for something else ;)

Interestingly I am using it by its definition, some personality traits are assets while others can be liabilities.

Rubbish. Teachers, police officers, civil servants, doctors etc can be paid very well and exist in effectively the same climate. Specialist nurses can earn in excess of £40k pa.

In this case the poster specifically says she is on the equivalent of £11.00 hour. The NHS has flattened the pyramid like many other organisations over recent years, even before the current pay freeze. The same could be said about many specialist roles in many fields. Theren't aren't many generals on the field of battle.

I'll bet that she isn't. I know 4 nurses and not one of them works that pattern; although yes they do generally have to be more flexible about hours than most.

If they work in a hospital then very few will not be doing shift rotas.

Being a nurse is not a physically demanding role unless your baseline is sitting at a desk.

Have you tried lifting /moving patients that won't/can't assist themselves. Have you tried to get a trolley moving from stationery with a 20stone patient on it.

I don't need, or intend, to demean nurses, but I'm sick of seeing them treated as some kind of martyrs when there are people doing more demanding jobs for considerably less money, job security and benefits.

Doubt it if they have trained and qualified in a vocational role. There are many more that pick up considerably more without the demands placed upon NHS clinicians.

Wonder no more, my priority is being financially secure so I can focus on what I find important.

Good luck in your quest stuff happens in life and you may well find your focus blurs and the holy grail will become more attainable. You are young, I expect, so infallible at present.

No, and I wouldn't find either difficult, but my personal physical fitness does not define the bounds of physically demanding and you wishing it to be the case that being a nurse is isn't either.

At some point you're going to realise that I'm not suggesting working as a nurse is easy or anything of the kind but that the people doing it are largely ignorant of the benefits they already have when complaining about pay.

Obviously there are plenty of jobs paying considerably more and those jobs are generally defined by one of two factors:
    1. There is a shortage of people who can do the job effectively.
    2. The value of a nominal improvement in performance is a vast increase in value created

Welcome to a capitalist economy and the wonders of supply and demand.

I have just checked OED, Cambridge and Collins dictionaries all of which state that the meaning of net-worth and origin of net-worth are 'net assets' and a fundamentally financial measure.

If you have a reputable source showing the non-financial/monetary origins then I will be obliged to be enlightened and accept my error. If however you don't actually know that net-worth means some vague and nebulous concept of 'worth' I suggest you stop pretending otherwise.
