What can I grow indoors and in small pots?

Hello OSers,

I'm here to pick your brains. I'm sick and tired of paying fat cats lots of money and would love to grow my own veggies etc. :j

An allotment isn't an option at the moment, as much as I'd like one. We're expecting a baby in three weeks, so I can't promise lots of time to an piece of land that we wouldn't be able to maintain with our extra baby workload.

We have sill space and limited room on a balcony in front of our house (it's a walkway to other houses, so tall, skinny plants would be best). Think the Naomi Campbell of veggies.

I'd be willing to do baskets too, but just don't know where to start. What can I grow, where do I buy it for as little as possible and how do I keep it alive???

I think you might be best off asking this one on the Greenfingers board. I've had some fab advice from them.
One day I might be more organised...........

Certainly do, but it is quite new.

I'm starting some alpine strawberries which I hope will grow and putting them in hanging baskets. Some herbs in those long planters as they cost me a lot for fresh. Trying to start with what will save me the most money. Was going to do carrots but I get them cheaply so doing lettuce instead, well trying to.

I think there's a variety of tomato called "tumbling tom" which grow brilliantly in hanging baskets.
Strawberries grow quite well in pots too.
don't forget herbs as well, even I can't kill rosemary :D

I'll move this to the greenfingers board where you should get more help.

    Good luck with the baby.
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.

I read on MSE about growing spring onions in pots - cut off and leave some of the white bit and root and they will regrow apparently. Cant remember OP sorry. Going to try that. Bought some cut and come again lettuce to grow in 2 or 3 pots on my kitchen windowsill - will space out planting so there should always be some ready.

Also have chives and going to get some mint and peppermint, and maybe a couple of other herbs depending on space. I have 2 lovely long sunny windowsills in kitchen and diner so plan to use it all.

    Radishes would do ok on windowsill too; as far as the walkway - how about a few runner beans - train them up something (think you can just use string if you have means to attach it to roof if your walkway is covered) and they shouldnt take too much horizontal space;
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

Forgot to add that I am trying Charlie Dimmock's idea for growing potatoes too - empty out a grobag, turn it inside out (looks better!) and then roll down. put some compost back in bottom, put in a potato or two and cover with compost. As the potatoes grow, cover with more compost unrolling the gro bag as needed. These wouldn't take up too much floor space though they would need support in case they tipped over - bit dangerous where people are walking by. Problem may be finding somewhere to store the grobag compost until you need it to top up - I have room outside to stand a small plastic dustbin with a lid.
