Vanquis took £2400 from me and I've never heard of them?!?

in Credit cards
Hi,
I had a text message off my bank this morning saying that I was overdrawn, this set alarm bells off as I knew I had plenty of money in that account. When I logged on to my account I saw that Vanquis had taken a Huge sum of money.
Now at this point I didn't know who Vanquis were so I rung my bank.
It turns out they are a credit card company, this set more alarm bells off as I have never had any credit cards, the simple reason for this is that I have never needed one.
Lucky for me I bank with a reputable bank and they reimbursed me straight away and will chase Vanquis for the money.
I believe that this has happened as a result of being burgled a few months ago and they must of took some post/documents with enough details for them to apply for a card in my name.
My question is, what's to stop this happening again? I mean, they obviously have my address (although no credit card has been posted there) current account details and DOB etc etc.
It's just, once this is sorted I don't want it happening again.
Thanks in advance.

If you only got burgled a few months ago and someone stole your ID how the hell have they ran up a credit balance of £2400 when they start their credit limits at £250.0 -

My first credit limit with them was £500.0 -
OP, have you checked if there are standing orders or direct debits for Vanquis on your current account, otherwise I don't see how this transaction was able to get through?0

It would have taken a year or two (even three years) to have gotten to that limit with Vanquis.
As Bugsy said, The limit is normally started at £250 which about 90% of their customers are given initially as it is a credit card for high risk people.
Doesn't sound right to me.0 -

I'm not sure how they've done it............ But it's the only way I can think of that someone has been able to get enough details to apply for a card in my name.0 -

But like others have said, to get it in your name they'd need appropriate id, and that means you would have got the card, not them. Unless they are stealing your post as well.
It could be of course something more simple, like setting up a DD to your account details to a card they have setup in some fake name, in an attempt to keep the card active for longer.
Are you sure you have no SOs or DDs active on your account?0 -
Do vanquis not need a landline number to be able to ring you to confirm the account? Traceable maybe?0

The cards would have gone to your address also.
Have you checked your credit file? Maybe just a wrong number on someones account?
