How do I name and shame a company? What am I allowed to say?

Hi all.

How do I name and shame a company? What am I allowed to say?

I've just been given an extremely bad service by a tailor. I had two expensive leather jackets altered. The alterations are not as I requested, and the work is terrible. The jackets were expensive, and were as new prior to me taking them to be altered. Now they are effectively ruined. The company(he) are refusing to do anything about the bad alterations, or even discuss it with me. I intend to pursue this to try and get my money back via my credit card company. Luckily I paid with a Visa credit card, but I don't know if I am covered or not. And I have no idea how to get the jackets compensated for.

However, I also want to warn others about how bad the company is, but the company has threatened me with action if I give them bad publicity that leads to loss of business.

Can someone tell what I am allowed to say and if I name the company, can they sue me for bad publicity or loss of business?
If I am allowed to name the company, can anyone tell me how to get the best coverage to make others aware? Are there any special websites dedicated to telling others about bad companies?

Thanks

  • Posters often name and shame . . . providing you're account is truthful, I'm not sure what they could sue you for . . .

Pretty sure telling the truth hasnt been outlawed just yet, so if you are happy your account of how things have happened is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, then i would just tell everyone the company and what happened.

As it seems to be a national past time, i have no doubt their are thousands of message boards on-line where people go to complain, just google them.
  • You can say whatever you want - as long as it it true...............

If the work on your coat is as bad as you say it is - some good photographs would help you and possibly shame them into doing something.
Certainly get the Credit card company involved. If the tailoring company ruined your coats, they are in Breach of Contract, so you can use Sect 75. (As long as the cost was over £100)

Can you get a 'professional' opinion (in writing) of the quality of the alterations?

    Hi all,

Thanks for those replies. Yes unfortunately the work is bad. Both jackets are ruined unless he or another tailor can rectifiy them. I'm going to see another tailor tomorrow to get an opinion/quote.

The alterations cost 400 pounds. Yes I know, too much, but I wanted the jackets altered, and he was advertised as the best specialist leather tailor I could find.

The tailor in question is FADI tailoring. He has branches at Kingston Tadworth and Walton, all in Surrey.

FADI has again said the work is perfectly ok, and is refusing to do anything.

I found someone else today who has also had trouble with this tailor, and has desctibed him in the same way I have. I wish I'd seen that before, i wouldn't have gone anywhere near FADI tailoring.

I rang the credit card company, Nationwide, and they said they would be happy to start a dispute with the tailor, but that it was not their responsibility to give me the money back. The person I spoke with at Nationwide, said she had never heard of section 75, and would just send me a form so they could talk to the tailor.

How do I make the credit card company take responsibility, if they can't make FADI repay me?

    Thanks

Bovine excreta from the Nationwide !!!!!!!

If there has been a breach of contract they ARE equally responsible. All you have to do is TELL THEM !

This is what you (and them !!!) should read ............

Thanks yangptangkipperban , I'll read that.

Does anyone know, apart from getting back the money I paid to the tailor for the badly carried out alterations, can I get compensation for the ruined jackets?

You can recover the cost of alterations from CC provider.

You would need to raise an action in the small claims court for damages. Not as daunting as it sounds. I have raised two actions against businesses and won both cases.

I'll get back on to Nationwide tomorrow and try and get them to begin the section 75 process.

Meanwhile I want to start a name and shame thread for FADI tailoring. can anyone tell me which section on MSE I should do that?

I'm also looking for FADI internet advertising that has feedback.

Meanwhile, if there is anyone here thinking of using this tailor, be very careful if you do. Make sure you personally write full instructions, and get him to sign them so that he doesn't deny them at a later date. He is not as good as he claims to be. He doesn't follow the instructions you give him, and carry out alterations to your requirements. He then refuses to accept liability for his poor work, or to even talk to you about any kind of refund or compensation. He also tried to bully and intimidate me by shouting swearing and threatening to lose his temper. Sorry to say I found myself shouting back.

I've also discovered today, that he dumps rubbish in the street, and gets prosecuted for it, according to the local surrey guardian news paper . 6th March 2012, "He (Fadi Dabbagh) was found guilty at Croydon Magistrates Court on March 6, and was handed a £500 fine. He was also ordered to pay a further £500 costs and a £15 victim surcharge. "

How did I fail to spot him before I parted with my money? I suppose you live and learn. But at least someone caught him at something.
