Haven't These Employers Got A Conscience?

Haven't these employers got a conscience? I ask this because none of them seem to be giving us long-term unemployed a chance. Once they see you have been out of work for some time, they turn their noses up, and take on these ones with recent experience. This practice is NOT fair, as these employers do not seem to realise that the recession has made it impossible for long-term unemployed people to get back into work in order to get that experience.

The government needs to crack down on these employers - punish them - for turning up their noses at long term jobless people. We are FED UP with being treated like excrement on the shoe - like LEPERS - just because we have been unable to get recent work experience.

Oh, and by the way, I have over 25 years admin experience. Does that not account for anything, just because I haven't worked recently? It is not my fault that there has been a recession on for the last few years.

Hmm, just what Employers need - MORE "guidelines" telling them who they have to hire and why. Maybe employers will get to the stage where, when they need a new employee they pop along to a Govt Office, take a ticket and stand in Line.
When their turn comes round, they will be "allocated" a new member of staff that meets all the requirements for "fairness".
Irrelevant whether they can do the job or fit in to the work-place, as long as the Govt boxes get ticked....

I suspect your attitude comes through either on your CV/Covering letter or interviews or tests.

Plenty of long term unemployed people get employment and I would actually go as far to say you are in a better position than many just leaving uni. At least you have some experience!

I don't visit this board very often but when I do invariably I find you having a rant about the latest injustice done to you. Give it a rest. Put your efforts into doing something more positive.

I must hasten to disabuse you immediately of that misconception that my attitude "comes across" in my covering letters or CVs. It does NOT. In fact, I make damn well sure that it DOESN'T. I do EVERYTHING I can to perfect my interview technique - for crying out loud, I have even been on courses (not that I needed them, but had to go on account of the jobcentre) on how to best put yourself over at interview. Yet these employers don't want to know, as they have "The Cream" of the pick to choose from, and God do they know it! Merseyside employers are particularly bad for this, given the thousands here chasing every job!

Oh yes, I take your point that I have plenty of "experience". Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to cut any ice with these ultra choosy employers, who seem to stupidly think that nobody - NOBODY - who has even a few weeks gap in their employment record is worthy of a chance. Pathetic.

What, like trying to find a job in this miserable, rubbish economy???

I wonder if saying it doesn't is actually enough to alter the suspicion that it does ...
If you think of it as 'us' verses 'them', then it's probably your side that are the villains.

If you were an employer who would you choose, someone who has been unemployed for 3 years with 25 years admin experience or someone currently employed with 25 years admin experience?

The 3 years (or however long) can make a difference in terms of up to do date skills especially in computer related jobs!

This is why schemes such as new deal (or whatever it is now called now exist) to encourage employers to give the long term unemployed a chance.

There is nothing you can do except keep applying and hoping

The fact is that moaning on here isn't going to change anything. Having three rant threads on the first page of this board isn't going to accomplish anything. You can't force the employers to change their ways, so the only option is to make yourself a more attractive proposition to them. What can you do to make yourself more attractive to potential employers?

What could I do to make myself more "attractive" to an employer? Hmmm . . . let me think now . . . I suppose I could always try getting myself all dolled up as a glamorous, leggy blonde, ensuring that I flash plenty of leg when I go for interview (lol)!

And if it's a man boss, you can bet your bottom dollar that he is going to take on a pretty face who flashes a lot of leg.

Pathetic. I begin to agree with the others who feel your attitude is the problem here.
