Hi
Can anybody please offer me some advice.
I was aware that a few days ago my laptop may have been infected by a trojan or virus.
Lots of problems, change of homepage, not able to change it back, lots of warning signs coming from the Anti Virus.
I don't knnow how it go passed my Anti Virus, but I have other worries for now.
I have done a complete scan and used Spyware Doctor which did find and remove some problems.
However that has not solved the full problem.
I can now ge to the point of changing my homepage, but cannot do anything as all the butons are faded out. I cannot go into the registry as advised on some sites and now I cannot use Internet Explorer and a warning signs comes up from the Anti Virus reading C:\Progam File Explorer\iexplore.exe.s\Internet, amongst others similar.
I may be paranoid now, but at times I have tried to google for answers and the page will not display, is it possible the virus could do that?
As another plan last night I went into safe mode and tried a scan but nothing.
What should I do next, is it best to restore rom a Backup I made a couple of weeks ago, if so will this clear the problem.I suppose what I need is a basic step by step suggestion as to what to do next.
Many thanks
Martin

try downloading and running prevx1, I had an infestation that non of the usual tools could shift (spybot, avg spyware, spywareblaster and so on) but this removed it and sorted the problem.
http://www.prevx.com/default.asp
It is free for the first month (which only begins after the first use of it to remove problems, scans are unlimited until a problem is removed) it then monitors you systems to prevent any re-infections, I was so impressed with it I bought it.Signature No Longer acceptable -

Sounds like you have a browser hijack. Try following posts 1 to 4 of the spyware/malware removal sticky at the top of this forum
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=133269
If that doesnt work, run HijackThis and post the results here. There are a number of people here who are very experienced in sorting out the log from HijackThis.
If you run HijackThis make sure to install it in its own folder not a temporary directory.0 -
Have you tried using "system restore" to restore the system back to before you had the virus ??0
-
I have just tried a system restore, I did a backup to my portable Freecom drive, however, it takes a while to get going but then reaches a certain point and asks for disc two, which I don't have.
I just pressed back up a few weeks ago and directed it to my portable drive, so I dont know if I'm doing anything wrong.
I'm worried I dont have a back up.
I have not internet access for my laptop at work but I will try the other suggestions tonight.
It is worrying that all this passed through my Anti Virus though.
Which is the best to use, I use Kapersky, I did have Norton but read many articles in which Norton came out low but Kapersky came out very good, maybe it was the wrong choice.
Thanks for the advice so far.

Martin, Anti-virus wont stop spyware/malware. You need to be running programs like AdAware, Spybot Search and Destroy, and AVG Anti spyware to stop these.
Follow the spyware/malware sticky as I said earlier and the people here should sort it out.0 -

Antiviruses do stop spyware/adware... in kaspersky, click settings... on the right hand side, make sure "spyware, adware and dialers" is ticked. As we all know, no AntiVirus or AntiSpyware tool will protect against ALL threats, but some are better at protecting than others, (kaspersky being one of the better ones)
i personaly recomend you do a scan with SuperAntiSpyware and AVG-AntiSpyware as well. Delete all threats
then post a HijackThis log here.0 -
Here are the results of my Highjackthis report.
Hope this is correct as it is the first time I have done this.
Thanks again for all the help so far.

I have just tried a system restore, I did a backup to my portable Freecom drive, however, it takes a while to get going but then reaches a certain point and asks for disc two, which I don't have.
Martin, the system restore I'm talking about is the one that comes with windows xp. You click on Start.. Programs.. Accessories...System Tools.. System Restore then use "Restore my computer to an earlier date".
Windows XP normally backs itself up on the local hard drive, I'm a bit confused why it would ask for disc two.0 -
When I try and restore from backup it tells me that System Restore has been turned off and puts me on to a screen to turn it back on. On doing this, I untick the box but then it tells me there has been an error and should re start and try again.
I have done this but to no avail.
I presume this may be part of the problem I have.
