I've just bought myself a laptop. I looked at Packard Bell but opted for Samsung RV520 instead.
I wouldn't buy the laptop you're asking about for the simple reason the processor B830 is out of date. To kinda future proof you laptop you should consider a processor which is i3, i5, i7 or AMD 6 or AMD 10. You REALLY need to do a lot of research on Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.com and Tech Radar at the least before parting with your money.
On a side note, I did consider the Packard Bell TS11 - it made my Amazon wish list.:j I hope my comment helps :T0 -

But the Celerons are a more of a "value" processor when compared to the i3/5/70 -
Not sure why this 'future proof' myth is propagated.
Buy according to your needs and your pocket.
The laptop will likely stop working before it becomes obsolete.
I'm currently using a less powerful Dual Core Celeron in my more than three year old laptop. Still runs everything that I need.
By all means, buy an i3 if you can find one for £280.
Nothing wrong with a Celeron, but don't buy that machine...especially at that price.
This Fujitsu AH 512 is better value than the machine in your post. Not that either would be my choice.
Buy this Aspire 5749 instead. If you even think about it before ordering, it will be gone and you will be kicking yourself.0 -

But "future proof" sounds so good ! :rotfl::rotfl:
For what the OP says the machine is for, it sounds fine.
I've had a Packard Bell desktop for a couple of years now - it was "end of range" price; put some more RAM in, an extra HDD and another graphics card (to drive two monitors) - cost a lot less than an all singing future proof model.0 -
If you miss the ACER and they aren't going to be carting it around, then consider a bigger screen.
This Toshiba Satellite C870-11F with a 17.3" widescreen is ok for £289. Though have a look in your local ASDA to see if they have any left at £260. Unlikely, but worth a look.
If they will be carrying it around, then this Dell Inspiron N411z is an option at £3000 -
How about this Packard Bell TS44:

Is this worth the extra over the Fujitsu AH512 for £275. In fact is there any laptop worth the extra £40 to £50 over the Fujitsu.
Samsung RV520 also on the list, here at £331:

ever heard of tiger laptops? Looks a reasonable site with a phone number so I can call before ordering.
Use will be for my 11-year-old to use mainly for school work and internet browsing for the next few years. He currently plays Minecraft (which I'm guessing doesn't work the CPU that hard!), but he may want to play more advanced games in coming years so I'd like to bear that in mind. He also likes to have at least a dozen browser tabs on the go!
Max budget £350, but may be happy to forgo that final 2 or 3% of CPU speed to save £50.0 -

This Acer Aspire 5749 is good value at £254.
Though if you are thinking about gaming, you should look for dedicated graphics.0 -
Thanks NiftyDigits (esp. re Tiger laptops!). I should have mentioned that my wife and I have decided not to go for a refurbished one to play safe. We were worried refurbished ones would come in damaged boxes, or might have been dropped in the warehouse and may develop faults.
I had considered the separate graphics processor before, but that went a bit beyond my knowledge. Is this OK:

Or do you really need so spend around £400? In which case I don't think we would, and hence be back to the laptops and questions in my first post.0 -

Damaged box? Do you have a phobia of less than perfect packaging?
I would not have suggested the ACER if I wasn't confident that it would be pristine.
Though it will arrive in quite ordinary packaging.
You have exactly the same warranty and protections as you would get buying the Packard Bell. You will not be any less safe.
In fact, I bought one of those machines. Packing plastic was still attached.
I know about the PB machine to which you have linked, but I would prefer the ACER Aspire 5560G, rather than it's PB counterpart.0
