Brown Garden Bin From Local Council £20

I get my green (garden recycling) for free, I also have a black box for plastic glass and a green bag for paper, I have 2 of each as even though there is only two of us.

I really don't understand why council are charging for recycling equiptment etc, when the government is trying to encourage us to recycle. I have been complaining to my council that others in my street do not recycle!

they are now going to do a letter drop to encourage them.

We get a green box collection weekly which covers paper, tins, glass, and plastic bottles (plus bits like batteries, mobile phones etc that you only recycle rarely). On top of that there is a compost collection fortnightly - you can put out cardboard for free, and garden waste (no kitchen scraps) either goes out in a big brown sack (cost 50p) or you can get a green wheelie bin for something like £30 a year. I put cardboard out but the other all goes in one of my two daleks. Everything else gets put out in black bags and collected weekly. Interestingly they've always resisted wheelie bins here due to the hilly terrain (lots of steps up and down to houses) but they are quite happy to have them for garden waste (maybe in general that is lighter?).

We were promised at the recent elections that the collection days would be harmonised - at present its green box on Tuesday, cardboard every other Wednesday (which I always forget!) and other rubbish on a Thursday so having it all on one day would make it much easier to remember!

Although we are given an official green box they are pretty relaxed about what you put stuff out in - the family opposite have a set of stacking containers they use to seperate stuff out which they just put out as is with no problems. There's currently a display in the local shopping centre of different recycling bins - stacking crates, segregated pedal bins and alsorts - not cheap but it appears industry is finally waking up to the need to give us solutions to help us do this in our homes without having piles of stuff everywhere!

I agree that its odd for councils to charge for the garden waste collections, but certainly here they wouldn't collect it with normal rubbish if it was obvious so you'd have to take it to the dump yourself (that's all seperated so it would still be recycled). I guess therefore the argument is that the small charge saves you the time and cost of that trip so its fair to get a contribution.

I'm amazed at all the different methods of collecting waste each council adopts and ours is different again!

We have black bags for household waste, collected weekly.
Brown paper sacks for garden/kitchen waste and cardboard (basically compost stuff) - collected fortnightly.
Black box for paper, glass and tins - collected fortnightly.
Large cardboard items, squashed flat - collected fortnightly.
Old catalogues/telephone directories etc - collected fortnightly.

The only thing that isn't recycled here yet is plastic, which is rather annoying and makes up the bulk of my household waste. Even so I still only put out 1-2 bags a week, yet some neighbours can have up to a dozen or more black bags every week!!! How on earth do they generate so much waste!!! :eek:

I guess the good thing is we don't have a huge collection of bins to find homes for in our gardens ... just the black dalek I recently bought for my composting

PS all our waste is collected the same day (Monday) so it's just a case of remembering which week is recycling week too and leaving everything out together which is then collected by the different bin lorries.

I live under the rule of scarborough borough council, and I must say they do seem to be behind the time's, this september we should be getting a blue bin free of charge, the brown bin was optional, you can buy a brown bin for £20 or buy plastic bag's 10 for a £1 so I though the bin was the better buy, and it has been, the blue bin's are going to be for paper, plastic, and cardboard, so that should make a huge difference in my bin's.

Luton Council are quite active.
Black bin for normal rubbish. collected weekly.
Green bin for plastic, paper, cardboard, metal. Collected alternating weeks.
Brown bin for garden waste. Collected alternating weeks.
In September we'll get indoor boxes and outdoor bins for food waste.
No collection for glass but lots of supermarkets and car parks have skips in place.

I never have any food waste as I have 2 very big dog's.
so I hope I don't get any food waste boxes as they will go to waste in my house.
