My cat keeps being attacked in his own garden

Hi

Wonder if someone can offer some advice please. I have a gorgeous male neutered cat who is a real softie and am having major problems with the cats from a lady next door but one. She keeps getting cats but doesn't look after them so they turn back to wild and are as nasty as anything (I'm pretty sure they are not neutered), they have attacked my husband once when he went into our garage and the cat was in there and they constantly come into my garden and attack my cat, he is now left with a really nasty wound on his side which I am now having to treat.

I cannot go to the woman concerned as she is a bit strange and have had problems in the past with her, she accused my husband of spying on her and reporting her to social services for leaving her kids alone. we had a solicitors letter and a visit from the police about it. All my husband did was call round one day to tell her that one of her cats was dead in the road (she had 3 all killed). We had to pay a solicitor to write back to her and explain it all to the police that we did not report her and cannot see her house from ours.....She also has a german shepherd dog which attacked my oldest son and knocked me to the ground when I was pregnant... the police are aware of this.

I have approached the RSPCA regarding her cats and they say there is nothing they can do as they are free roaming creatures but surely the fact that she's had 3 killed and now these 2 are wild and nasty should mean they can get involved.

Don't know what to do for the best,,, why should I have to keep my cat indoors so that hers can roam freely in my garden. My garden is big so I cannot cat proof all around. I also keep my cat in at night to try and avoid problems but they just come round during the day.

Would appreciate any advice.

Thanks

Sorry to be blunt but you can't have it both ways. You either want more control over cats, and therefore need to control your cat by investing in catproofing for the garden, or you accept that they are freeroaming.
As a cheaper alternative could you make a cat run/aviary for your cat? Would any DIY cat-proofing solutions be feasible? E.g. a strip of string or wire stretched along the top of each panel to make them harder to climb/walk on?

I suppose if the cats were acting so wild, you may possible mistake them for ferals and if you happened to borrow a cat trap from your local CPL/other cat organisation you could send them off to be rehomed and/or neutered. Not that I'd condone stealing someone else's pet, but there are schemes run for local ferals..

I have a large garden too and decided for various reasons that I needed to cat-proof it. But instead of doing the whole lot which would have been impractical and expensive, we built an enclosure that takes up about a third and filled it with cat-friendly things such as grasses to play in, cat mint and a cat house too! So the cats have quite a large area still to play in outside, but it didn't cost a fortune to do ;)

I think I'd be inclined to trap the 'feral cats that have no owner' and pass them along to a charity that can deal with them too...

Charities can usually help with neutering ferals, but lots struggle to take them in because they are just so difficult to rehome. Sad but true.
DONT BREED OR BUY WHILE HOMELESS ANIMALS DIE. GET YOUR ANIMALS NEUTERED TO SAVE LIVES.

Cat territory boundaries doesn't always match up with human territory boundaries unfortunately: it being your garden doesn't mean it is your cat's garden unless you cat proof it. When I had outdoor cats mine used to gang up on next doors cats - one whilst pregnant! - and chase them up their garden or surround them under their car. :o I brought them in when I saw it and mine were both neutered.

Agree get the cats trapped and neutered for their own good, so they don't catch and spread disease like FIV. Many branches of Cat Protection will TNR ferals and semi ferals.

The risk with that is that the owners of said "ferral" will just get another kitten that will grow into another unneutered nuisance....

It's quite entertaining shooting at/near the little b*ggers in the knowledge you aren't actually hurting anything other than their pride. And the lesson is well remembered.

  • We have the same problem, but I'm not sure who the cat belongs to that's attacking our neutered male cat, typically all the girls would stand up for themselves, but he is just so easy going, I swear he just sits there and takes it :(

I would be inclinded to start cat proofing your garden to ensure your boy cant get out and they cant get in.

Invest in a couple of super soakers and get the !!!!!!s as and when you see them.

And then i would have no issue getting some traps and trapping them and handing them in as strays.

I would also keep on at the police and RSPCA about owning a danerous dog and neglecting to care for the cats in her 'care'

Good luck ... not an easy one im afraid.

All the cats that have come into our garden dont anymore. A near death experience (well they think it is, i just scare them BIG time) tends to put them off coming in to bully my boys :o
