I'm not really a small dog fan, kind of like some wee fluffy ones but it wasn't really fluffy so just not for me. I can see why people would like it though and of course I would never be cruel to one.

I never thought for a second you'd be cruel. I'm not a small dog person either. But ones like Cairns, Westies and Scotties seem more like "real" dogs to me. I don't like the fluffy ones - we're all different :D

I don't even have a dog as both OH and I are out all day at work. When we retire, though...

We always had rescue mutts and I'm more of a cat person, but if I had the time/energy/lifestyle, I'd have something like a bloodhound or American c00nhound. Something fairly large and easy to groom that liked lots of walking. Next door have a chocolate lab and she's utterly adorable and soppy - a couple of my cats go into her house sometimes, and she's so excited she brings them her fluffy duck and her Dad's slippers while they sit on her Dad's lap.

I'm wouldn't be cruel, like you said would never be nasty too it but it reminded me of a rat ( its only 9 weeks) and well I think they are horrible.

Some will think my giant puppy is horrid too though :D

Someone should tell my small fluffy dogs they aren't 'real' dogs. They insist on behaving like dogs and they seem to think that's what they are...

Everyone can have a preference, but lets not be insulting or rude about other types, eh?

Whatever happened to Afghans that were all the rage back in the 70's and there used to be alot of Irish setters here too, don't see them nowadays either, shame.

I think big dogs are generally out of fashion, or people don't think they'd fit their lifestyles. The other week, a lad at work asked me when the last time I saw a Great Dane was and I decided it's been years.

I'm probably not doing much for preserving the breeds though, I've only ever had mongrel rescue dogs.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

I have grown up with giant breed dogs. I love them, and know them well, often having knowledge vets don't expect to have about health problem indicators and what treatment has had best outcome for most.

    But......

We also have a large greyhound who broke her leg last summer, (and again last week :(). And that made me relaise now, living either alone while dh is away weekdays, or with one elderly parent, if the giant had a similar accident I would not be able to nurse her through it. She will be the last we have in a tremendous line of them.

    It's a horrid decision.

Other factors are that they cost a lot more to keep (food, grooming if you pay for it, and certainly medication, even routine stuff like wormer and flea treatment). I cannot imagine how life will feel without one.

Shame about the Welsh terrier, now that's a handsome doggie. The wheaten had a cute face too.

The large Yorkie seems to be ever growing in numbers here, I know at least 6 others besides mine, at least they are better looking that bloomin Staffies, they've got to be one of the ugliest dogs going, right up there with pugs, a face only a mother could love

I had an Afghan until July and hopefully will be getting another one soon. There are still breeders of Afghans in this country although not that many - quite a lot abroad though, France, Italy, Poland.

They are hard work though. They need about 3 to 4 hours exercise a day preferably with most of it offlead. They also need a lot of grooming and if they get wet they take hours to dry. They are lovely dogs though, very affectionate, laidback and playful. Also they are nowhere near as stupid as they are made out to be - quite the opposite in fact. I have had quite a few - 9 in fact - and I love that they are so young at heart. All of mine have loved until at least 11 and were healthy until maybe a couple of months before they had to be pts. Every single one of them were full of life and would run round the park/beach/woods like crazy. People would ask "Is your dog a puppy?" and be amazed when I said "They are 10/11/12 or whatever". I could never have a dog which is old and plods along when it gets to 5 or 6. I have met so many labradors like that.

I don't mind staffies. There are a few where I live but not that many. I would say the most popular dog where I live is the labrador - I am not keen on them at all.

According to the Kennel Club, some of our breeds of dogs are becoming endangered.
Old English sheepdog, Pembrokeshire Corgi, Welsh Terrier, Wheaten Terrier, Clumber Spaniel etc.

Couldn't agree more Dollar :( I wasn't really aware of how many breeds were affected until Crufts this year when they did an awareness spot on some of the breeds.

Unfortunately it becomes a bit of a spiraling circle - as the breeds become rarer, the litters cost more, people can't afford them so less are bought etc etc.

One of my particular favourites (I'd love one of these:o) is the Dandie Didmont http://www.ddtc.co.uk/

When I went to Crufts this year, it was very disheartening to see how many breeds are strugglig to survive. I think hte Skye terrier only had 29 puppies registered the previous year, the Sealyham breeders club were heavily promoting the fact that the breed may die out and I really fell in love with the Glen of Imaal terrier, which is again, facing a decline.

Compare that with around 7000 westies being born two years ago. I like Westies, but why such an imblance in numbers? is it all down to looks and fashion?:(
