Softwood logs

We had some conifers cut down about 18 months ago; naively took up the offer from the tree surgeons that they look the remaining logs for firewood.

I soon realised that a) most of the logs are too big for our fireplace and will need chopping up, and b) they are not suitable anyway for burning (we don't have a wood burning stove, we have a 'traditional' open fireplace).

I understand sappy softwood will burn quickly and potentially cause problems with the chimney. Am I right?

I am too lazy to chop up all the logs, but I also want rid of them. What should I do with them? Does anyone think someone would be prepared to but softwood logs, that need chopping up?

If you chop them up there's no reason why you can't burn them on your open fire. I've burnt conifer in the past, it burns fast but is free heat. I doubt you'd be be able to sell it but you won't have any problems giving it away if you stick a few notices up in your local area or free newspaper.
