Christmas present ideas for mum

Don't suppose I can put off thinking about this for much longer. I'm certainly not the kind who leaves everything to the last minute!

Anyway, I know what I'm getting for sis (making her an iPad cover and gift card for Waterstones). Kind of know what I'm getting Dad.

But I'm completely stumped for a present for mum. Haven't got a clue. So I'm coming here to ask for help/ideas.

She doesn't really do cosmetics/toiletries, they generally get wasted. Perfume's a possibility but I'd really love to get her something different for a change. I've been looking on the likes of Etsy/Folksy. Would something for the home be a good idea? I'm never sure about anything like that.

Any help's much appreciated.

Last year I made my Mum a little hamper up of all her favourite foods, the kind of thing she loves but never buys herself as it is too extravagant.

Posh biscuits, crackers, cheese (if you buy the ones enclosed in wax they don't need to be in the fridge) really nice breakfast tea, sugared almonds chocolate covered brazil nuts, chutney, little glass jars of old fashioned sweets just really little tasters of everything all doe up in a basket with celophane and she was delighted with it as I had actually put thought into it and bought her favourites so it was not like a generic hamper that you would buy in a shop

I get ideas for my mum's present by listening to her throughout the year. She's been moaning for ages about how her assortment of can openers are all rubbish, so I've bought her a shiny new electric one, just like mine which I know she likes.

She ordered a handbag from a friend's catalogue but when it arrived it was all creased and looked really shabby. I found a very similar one on ebay and it arrived yesterday. No creases and it looks lovely so I know she'll be pleased with it.

I also got her a calendar featuring pigeons (don't ask!) and a box of pens because she can never find one that works. And some new bathroom scales because she's on a diet (again).

That's her sorted for this year!

Don't get her something for the home!

Last year DD bought me a lovely belt - something I needed - and theatre vouchers.

Posh undies would be nice, too.

Words, words, they're all we have to go by!.

  • My mum loves comical, very detailed jigsaws, so I have bought her a couple of those. I've also got her a calendar that she chose herself, a pack of biros because she goes through so many, some markers because she uses them to mark off the programmes she wants to see in the Radio Times. I've got a few other bits and bobs as well, but I can't remember what.

Would your mum like a pamper type of present? I've bought my mum a reflexology session before now, as I know she enjoys them.

For her birthday, my sister and I took Mum to Holmfirth for the day - she loves Last of the Summer Wine. We had lunch in The Wrinkled Stocking and afternoon tea in Sid's Cafe, as well visiting the Summer Wine exhibition and going on the coach tour. She had a great day, even though she had to use her walking stick quite a bit due to the steep hills (she's 79 and doesn't like to admit she needs it sometimes :))
  • Last christmas I bought my mum a subscription to a magazine - you can either choose one or you can buy a package which will allow her to choose - it was a great success

How old is she? What's your budget and what are her interests?

My mum and mil are the same age, but my mum would be horrified and upset if I got her a hoover and would love perfume whereas my mil would think perfume an extravagant waste of money and much prefer the hoover.

This year I'm getting my mum a pyrex measuring jug (hers is 25 years old and the markings have worn off) and a packet of those lotus caramel coffee biscuits. We only do little gifts and I really think she'll like these offerings. Or she'll think I'm an ungrateful daughter!
  • I've got my mum a new photo album and I'm going to fill it with photos :) She hasn't had a new album since I was young (<10) I like to think she'll appreciate it
