high mobile phone bill

Hi there,

I've just came back from honeymoon to find my new wife and I have phone bills of £800 and £1000!!

We both forgot to switch off our data roaming on the phones but were only in Dubai for 5 days! I didn't make any phonecalls and was hardly on the net, just to check a few emails while away.

Is there any way we can challenge the bill? It seems a ridiculous amount since we were only away 5 days. Any help would be much appreciated as we have money set aside but for things we would like to do to our house and this would be the worst possible to start to married life!

Thanks

    The curse of the smartphone!
You can try calling the provider(s) and plead for some consideration. They might make some sort of reduction to the bill.
Stand by for the comments regarding the need to check emails while on honeymoon...:D

You can't have forgotten if you also checked emails whilst you were away.
How much data did you each download, and what sort of UK data contracts are you on?
Did you just assume that any charges wouldn't amount to much?

What phones you got? Most phones now WARN you with messages on screen when you start roaming AND you often get a text from your operator!

Both messages usually warn of increased costs when roaming, so if this is correct in your case it will be a hard battle to get costs reduced. Simply as you had the warning messages. Try and speak with them and see what they say, let us know as well. Also you MIGHT still get more bills, especially if there is more outstanding to be added!

I'm going to be first :rotfl:- why you even using a phone on honeymoon.....
  • Just checking emails regarding the wedding and work commitments!

Will contact Orange tomorrow and see what they say but I am preparing to just pay the bill as we did get a text asking to buy a travel bundle but as I was hardly using the phone I didn't expect a bill of that size.

Will give an update if I get any success.

Ok, you owe it and know it! Well done for not whining. :T

However, you have nothing to lose by trying to get a reduction/goodwill gesture. Many MSE members have succeeded and the odd couple of hundred could help.

Try it and good luck - with both the goodwill and future married life.

phone/email on honeymoon, lol rather be tapping her keyboard
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

    Dubai: £8.00 per megabyte.

100MB is not just a few emails. Ask to purchase a bundle retrospectively. Come up with some equally stupid reason as to why you didn't purchase a bundle.

150MB bundle - 92% saving on standard rates
    £100 over 30 days.

So if you are lucky, you'll only have to pay £100 each.

I had a bill of £600 when we were on holiday in August - whilst I do accept that I turned the internet on a few times, I didn't get any warnings or messages advising me of the amount that was being built up until the last night of our holiday when I received a text message from a customer services lady advising me of the bill! We had gone to Europe and the usuage was all in the first week!

It's all the auto updates and push messages that do it and if you haven't logged out of FB etc then that updates.

Definately won't make that mistake again!

I couldn't challenge it as she sent me a print out - I just paid up and hung my head in shame (although I didn't tell OH about it - he would have gone mental!)
