Bleeding Radiator

Hi,

The radiator in my room is never heating up. at it has not been used in so long we thought best to give it a bleed, so turned on the heating system, waited for the system to heat up. then opened the valve, you could hear the air escaping along with water exiting the system, so far I've let out approximately 10 litres of water which seems like quite a sustancial amount, during the process I could feel the IN pipe warm up for a while then cooled down again, my guess would be that it was a air bubble inside the system,

my main question is do I keep going until it does start to get hot or what really. I'm convinced that there's not a blockage in the system otherwise there would be no pressure to transport what I believe to be the heat bubble.

You should only bleed with the heating OFF.

Try turning the warm rads off and see what happens to the one you have problems with. (With the boiler on)
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Perhaps you have a sticky TRV and the water that is coming in to the rad as you bleed is by reverse flow via the return?

Thanks for the replies so far, is there a particular way to check this without calling an engineer?

Yes remove the head from the TRV (undo the knurled nut - it should only be hand tight.)

Then see if the pin in the valve body moves up and down freely. If it does and the rad heats up satsifactorily without the head on then replace the head. If you now have a problem suspect the head and replace it. If it doesn't then move the pin up and down (press down the spring will return it up) several times in case its sticking with carp in it. That acction will usually free the carp and let it operate properly again.

I was about to suggest a sticky valve too. I solve mine by repeatedly kicking the rad/pipe until if frees off ;)

Until you kick the valve off the pipe of course.

Light taps are often successful. Thor's hammer blows inevitably lead to tears.
