Just ignore them - don't respond but keep a note of the times/dates of calls just in case the LA does need to eventually formally be warned off with a cease and desist letter

Whoops, glad I saw this & managed to call Mr. Kitten before he dropped it in the postbox!
But doesn't ignoring the agent make me look a bit dodgy and as if I'm in league with my friend?
TBH, I'd rather not have any dealings with them at all.

What is this LA expecting you to do? Stump up for the rent/damage yourself? You didn't sign up as a guarantor.

I think the contents of any letter along the lines of that suggested by pinkshoes earlier ie
"Dear <agent name>. On <date> you asked me to provide a reference for <name of person> describing their previous character. The reference that I wrote was a truthful reflection of their character up to and on that particular date. I am sorry to hear that they have since behaved so out of character, but this is nothing to do with me, and I cannot be held responsible for their actions. I do not appreciate being accused of writing a false reference, but should you wish to apologise, I will supply you with their new address/contact details as a gesture of good will."
    my bolding.

*would* make it seem as if you are acting in cahoots with the T.

You have a duty to be truthful when providing a reference of any sort but a personal reference is usually merely your opinion of the T's character, based on your personal experience/knowledge of the T and nothing more . Hence why LL/LA should also have made other appropriate formal referencing checks.

Making the passing on of any relevant info conditional merely makes you look as if you knew all along what was happening. It's really not that hard to trace people these days - let the LA get on with it.

    Thanks tbs624.
I've kept note of all contact from the LA..
I'm not actually sure *what* they expect me to do about it, as they haven't specified!
I'd written something short and sweet to them, along the lines of what DRP suggested, i.e.
I don't have my friend's contact details / please do not contact me again.
    But didn't post it.

Perhaps the agent did actually do all the checks and is actually trying absolutely everything to track down your friend and make them take responsibility for their actions. Perhaps contacting you is part of that. Doesn't mean the agent has been negligent in other areas.

No, but your documentation may end up being part of their court case.
