I am sure this must have been discussed many times on this board but I can't find any relevant threads !

My question is a deviation from the "cheap international calls" thread as I want to know the cheapest options for family members to ring me on my UK mobile when I go abroad.

Thank you

The cheapest option for them is to ring them as if you were in the UK, but it won't be cheap for you.
Cheap option I have found is to get a local PAYG sim and ring the caller back, or offer the number and get the caller to dial you from a landline via just dial.

    Just to clarify:

When you ring a UK mobile, regardless of where it is in the world, the caller pays the normal rate as the recipient of the call picks up the extra charge.

Example: I get 300 minutes per month on my tariff including calls to all mobiles. If I were to ring your mobile whilst you were out of the UK, the call would come out of my allowance as normal. You, however, would be charged for the "roaming" portion of the call and this varies depending on where you are in the world. Only the EU has a cap on calls, rest of world doesn't.

If you are looking for the cheapest option for you, it really depends on your service provider, though it is typically cheaper for you to receive calls than it is to make them. Always always always check in with your service provider before you travel as they may have peculiarities on their billing systems. For example, with T-Mobile if you don't turn your voicemail off you get charged up to 3 times:

    1) Call transmitted to your phone
    2) Call diverted back to voicemail platform in the UK
    3) Call back to voicemail platform to retrieve your message

    Hope that helps.

Use Viber and get a local SIM card from the country you're visiting. Avoid UK SIM cards for roaming, as it's usually a bad deal.

You on Orange or T-Mobile ? EE4G transfers to them give £5 bolt on to use your mins & texts in Europe and a few other places places, beware data allowances for UK are low even with unlimited text & talk.
    "TRAVELLING A LOT?

For an extra £5 each month, you’ll be able to take all your minutes and texts with you when you go and explore Europe and selected countries around the world."
    http://ee.co.uk/plans#section-phones scroll down page slightly.

Customers in first 6 months can transfer to EE4G and transfer existing term over, if your Orange/T-Mobile 6-12 months you are out of luck, but they will transfer you over on EE4G sim only if you have a lower priceplan than EE4G sim only plans between months 12-18-24 on Orange/T-Mobile, it may work out cheaper to pay Orange/T-Mobile off in lump sum in certain situations and just jump, more so if £5 roaming covers your country abroad.

Next cheapest is Voda but thats £3 per day every day you allowances in europe, I'd give that a miss !

Are you based in one country mainly and whats your network/priceplan ?
SO... now England its the Scots turn to say dont leave the UK, stay in Europe with us in the UK, dont let the tories fool you like they did us with empty lies... You will be leaving the UK aswell as Europe ;)
