You could get a .org.uk domain with 123-reg and forward it to your freewebs hosting.

Hmmm, that link isn't apearing correctly my end. It is just a row of "!!!" and see that your post has been filtered.

You need to take into consideration what this site is actually for. If it has some benefit and use to your group and hosts things for people to download or maybe even a message board then it will be worth paying money for. If it is just a web presence to say "we have a web site" then stick with what you have.

I pay quarterly for a large amount of webspace from https://www.hostgator.com

They do cheap packages also and have an awful lot to offer.

    I made my own.....:o well...almost !
I used a template off the net and I maintain it with a copy of dreamweaver my brother gave me.
The template gave me the outline and shape I wanted, from there I could alter and change the colours and design as i went along.
The website looks nothing like the template now..in fact ..all thats left is the background colour and the blue/green boxes.
I tinker with it all the time....I had problems with a comments board. I wanted a place where we could communicate and chat. I downloaded a free one from the net and chippy_minton very kindly put it in place and nailed any bugs for me.
There are plenty of people around to help out if need be...all you gotta do is ask !

Actually building a web site is the final step, sorting out the domain name registration and web space is the chore. You have to decide just how much space you want on the server, bandwidth considerations, database if needed etc.

As I said before you need to consider what this site is actually going to do before you splash the cash.

I have known quite a few people that have bought web space and not really done the research on what to use it for then pay direct debits each month for nothing.

I would brain storm out what you want on the site and what it can actually do for you before doing anything else.

I want the website to promote our unit. Give details of events, holidays and special occasions we have attended.

To promote Girlguiding UK and to have guest book for visitors and ex members. The only stipulation is I have to approve all entries to the guest book, which I currently do with a free guest book.

I want similar to our freewebs page but want it to look a little more professional

So bearing that in mind how much web hosting would you recommend ( money is tight as you can imagine)

  • googlepages is ideal for what you want.

You need a gmail address to get started but it is easy.

I have a site that I can send you a link to if you PM me, then you can see what it is like.
  • I am not sure how you would add a guest book but there must be a way around it.

There are help groups out there on the internet that may be able to help with this.

This is a great little package, you get a free .co.uk domain name and it only cost £35

Take some advice if you are going to get a guest book.
One sure fire way of receiving junk mail from nigerian scammers is to leave your email address in someones guest book.
I would be more inclined to have a comments board.

BT have been really helpful to UK community charities. Your group qualify to set up a free website here.

To give you some idea of one here is a Rainbow group using the service.

The site can be live within a few minutes and you can also enter the annual BT Awards to get free IT equipment for your group
