I'm a medium/light user and I pay £0 per month with my free Ovivo bundles.
If OP went for a £7 per month contract that would be £84 per year
Why throw money away like that?
Not to mention the risk of losing thousands of £ if the phone was lost or stolen.
PAYG is the only way to go unless you really need hundreds of minutes, texts mb etc. Most people don't. If you have a landline for broadband, then when you are home you can use the landline and 18185 for cheap calls and the WiFi for data.0 -
Herongull,Zagfles, did you not read the OP's post properly, they are already spending £10 on top ups every 5 or 6 weeks which equates to more than £84 per year !
Show me these payg packages that would work out cheaper bearing in mind they have stated they send upto 300 texts a month,I am interested myself.0 -
Have a look on your mobile provider's website, they all do packages/bundles/freebies on PAYG. But the important thing to remember is that PAYG gives you the flexibility to alter your usage every month rather than committing to buying x mins, y texts and z MB every single month. How many times have you heard people saying a call is "free" because they're out of inclusive mins, erm no they're not, if you've got mins to spare then you've bought too many! They're as "free" as the excess bananas you bought which will go off unless you eat them soon!Herongull,Zagfles, did you not read the OP's post properly, they are already spending £10 on top ups every 5 or 6 weeks which equates to more than £84 per year !

If you're going abroad you usually can't use inclusive mins/texts/data, so you've bought something that month you can't make full use of. If you're away from home in the UK for a week or two you may need more mins/data than usual so you'd exceed your allowance, on PAYG you just buy a bigger bundle that month.
Don't make the mistake many people do of letting contract allowances set the agenda, eg "my contract gives me x mins, y texts and z MB, that would cost lots more on PAYG". Erm, yes, or course it would, but do you use exactly x mins, y texts and z MBevery single month without fail? If not it's not a valid comparison.
For the OP I'd suggest PAYG mostly for security, until he gets used to a smartphone and how much he uses it - if he then finds his usage is consistent from month to month and that usage fits a contract tariff, and he's confident about monitoring usage and security settings on the phone in case it gets nicked etc, consider it. Otherwise stick with PAYG.0 -
I've spent the last half hour looking at different options and one that looks a good deal if you're prepared to sign up for 2 years is with Talkmobile,Samsung Galaxy Ace with 250 minutes,5000 texts and 500 mb for £7.50 a month,a lot less than the OP's budget....you could sell the phone for £100 on Ebay so that's effectively costing you £40 per year.
I might even go for that myself, pop the sim into my phone and sell the Galaxy0 -
EE dispells that "roaming" issue, unlimited texts/mins 12 month sim for £21 with 500MB data you can add a £5 roaming "bundle" for Europe and a few other places to use the UK mins/texts abroad.
SHAME data inclusion/pricing is the let down, EE 4G should be out in front of 3G and at least almost on par for a premuim, the premium EE adopted for data inclusion and excess rate bundles is just commercial suicide.SO... now England its the Scots turn to say dont leave the UK, stay in Europe with us in the UK, dont let the tories fool you like they did us with empty lies... You will be leaving the UK aswell as Europe

Just because OP is currently wasting around £100 per year isn't a good reason to waste only £84 per year. Waste is waste! If you really don't need the money give it to charity instead.
The free Ovivo monthly allowance has just been increased to:
100 Free Minutes (Any Network)
100 Free Texts (Any Network)
200MB Free Data
Free Ovivo to Ovivo Calls and Texts outside of your free allowance.
So for those months when he uses only 100 or less texts, the cost will be £0 per month, and in the busiest months where he uses as many as 300 texts, then buying the extra 200 texts will cost £12 (200x6p), but if some of these texts are to other people on Ovivo then they are free, so the cost for the busiest months should not be as much as £12.
I believe Whatsapp lets you send instant messages instead of texting, so he could use this in the "high texting" months, bringing the cost back to £0 per month.

Ovivo is interesting,as I understand it they haven't been in business long and have had a few problems already.....it's supported by adverts isn't it ?
You'd have to be a very light user tho ,but if you are it's a no brainer.
Btw,if you go over the monthly limits how do they charge you,do have to open a credit account ?0 -
Not experienced any problems myself. Currently, adverts not required. They were at the original free allowance levels, then not when the allowances dropped. Now they say to wait for an announcement about adverts on Thursday.Ovivo is interesting,as I understand it they haven't been in business long and have had a few problems already.....it's supported by adverts isn't it ?

I've had no problems with Ovivo, and no network problems (unlike Giffgaff on O2).
Even if you go over the free allowance and don't take a bundle, the PAYG cost for any extra calls/texts are very reasonable:
10p per minute
6p per texts
Unlimited Ovivo to Ovivo calls/texts0
