Tesco's new carrier bags - lies!

Went to Tesco today and only bought about a fiver's worth of shopping so not a massive heavy shop. Noticed at the checkout that they had new bags which were very seethrough. Packed, paid, picked up my bag - just doing that the bag split and everything fell out on the floor. Packed it all into another bag and double bagged it. Half way home both bags had split and I ended up bundling the bag up and carrying it in my arms. Got home and unpacked my shopping (or rather, held the handles up and watched everything fall out onto the kitchen counter!) - then read the print on the front that states their new bags are thinner so they're more environmentally friendly but just as strong as the old ones! Are they having a laugh? A box of instant soup was enough to make my bags split and they weigh nothing! I do normally take my own bag but was caught out today, definitely won't be shopping in Tesco without my own bag in future... I suppose the new bags are more environmentally friendly in that they frustrate you into bringing your own bags! Though if you DON'T take your own bag and end up using three instead of one like I did today... erm... fail.

That's one of my bugbears, they thin the bags which mean in 99% of cases you just cannot re-use them.
    Not very green at all!

If items are damaged as a result of falling through their poor quality carrier bags you should go to the customer service desk to ask for replacement items. I believe this was mentioned on BBC Watchdog a while ago.
  • Its a Tesco ploy to cut down on the amount of bags they give away.

Here in Wales we have to pay a minimum of 5p for each and every carrier bag we take. Result - we take our own!

The new Tesco bags are useless. I had some apples in mine and a pack of butter, that's all, and the bag split, the apples went everywhere and by the time I got them home they were so bruised they were good for nothing.

Not only take your own bags, but remember to claim a Clubcard point for every one you use - worth 3>5p in Clubcard Rewards.

But if I use 10p bags I then have to go and buy bin liners.

Whereas if the free carrier bags were decent I would only need those for both uses.

I used to use a very large, strong bag at Tesco which was purpose manufactured to fit inside a trolley. They used to award about 5 or more "green" points for the trolley/bagful of shopping.
On the last occasion I used this bag I was given 1 point. When queried the checkout operator said Tesco had changed their policy to that of 1 point/bag.
So by using just this one bag, equivalent to about 6 of their supplied plastic versions, I was only entitled to 1 point!
As a result of this I've never used my own bag(s) at Tesco and use about 6 of theirs at every weekly shop.
    Foot, shot in or what?:p
Yes, the new bags are rubbish. This means I now use more of them, doubling up etc..
