Next wont let me cancel an order? Are they allowed to do this?

I was given a £20 next giftcard and so looked online to buy some baby clothes. In the end I had £32 worth of stuff in my basket.

I had to register as a new customer. I was going through the payment process- I wanted my order delivered to the store and selected that option -and then realised that I hadn't been given the oppurtunity to redeem my giftcard, so I had to click back to where the redeem giftcard button was.

Filled in the giftcard details and then the only option left to click was complete order. I did so and then it said it was dispatching my items via courier to my home.

This is the last thing I wanted as courirers can never find my flat! Also I have had to pay £3.99 for delivery when store pickup would have been free.

Looked into cancelling the order and the Next website says they cannot cancel orders that were 'in stock' at the time of ordering. (though there was nothing to warn me about this before I placed the order) I only just placed the order 20 mins ago! Can they legally do this?

Thanks in advance.

Online order? You can cancel under DSRs at any time up until 7 working days AFTER delivery.

Common sense would dictate that for an order cancelled so soon after placing then the supplier should just cancel it. (NO actions will have been taken in respect of the order). However Next probably has automated systems that make it a real chore to try and circumvent.
  • yeah, I knew about the dsr thing but that means ill still be out of pocket for delivery (assuming the courier even finds us!) I know £3.99 isnt the end of the world but i feel a bit cheated as the order process took you to a new page to redeem giftcards and didnt seem to let you reselect delivery options.

le sigh, well i wont be shopping at next again.

I don't understand how you managed to place the order with so many errors... Surely there was a confirmation screen of some sort
  • Its kind of hard to explain, I was going through the order process, the 'giftcard payment' option disappears when you click on 'store delivery' - its at the side of the screen, so I clicked back to find it, and then once you put giftcard details in it only lets you complete the order.

I was working on the assumption that it was just like a normal website, but what has happened is I've opened an 'account' so now I have to wait to pay for the remainder of my order.

Theres still a chance I can salvage this as it seems some items in my order are not ready for despatch. Funnily enough when I click on 'my account' my order hasn't appeared yet!

When (if!) you get the order, simply return it to a store.

Phone the customer services and explain politely that you'd never used their website before and didn't realise that you could get orders delivered to store and you would have preferred that method.

They will refund it no bother.

Bought is to buy. Brought is to bring.
  • I'll try that if my other plan doesn't work. Of course then I'll have to reorder the stuff. ;)

Ah, sorry, I've just realised you only wanted to cancel because of the delivery charge - I somehow read it as you changed your mind about the order.

Just phone them up and say you are very happy with your order, but if you had realised you were able to get your order delivered to store then of course you would have chosen that.

Did you pay for the delivery out of your own pocket or the gift card?

You pay when you order online.
