Large bill! Help!

Options
Hi all, just a quick question.

I have been living in my friends 2 bed flat on my own for just less than 3 months.

All the bills are still in her name (because basically Im housesitting), but I am paying them, as I am the one using the place. So far it has been fine, but she has just received a bill for £213:eek: for 10th August to 17th October. Now I know I like having a bath, but for one person who works full time and doesnt have a great deal of washing etc to do, does that not seem a crazy ridiculous amount?!

I paide around £22 a month in my old place and that was with two people using the water...

I havent seen a copy of the bill yet (as she just text me) but it doesnt look like an estimated bill apparently.

I dont know who the water provider is but Im assuming its Thames Water as I live in London.

Any ideas?!

they could have underpaid on previous bills, or a leak

    Are you on a meter.

It depends on the rateable value of the property if you are not.

Your friend will have been paying this every 3 months if it is not on a meter. Ask your friend.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • I do not know how often the water is billed, but I would guess it would be quarterly like any other utilities bill, very strange if it is every two months or so. I am also making the assumption that the water is metered.

If this is not an estimated bill, then maybe the previous one was? It would be worth asking when the meter was last read. It would also be worth checking the meter reading, if you don't know where the water meter is ask so you can check it against the bill, it is possible fo rreaders to make mistakes.

  • Ok so its metered and charged quarterly apparently.

But surely I wouldnt use that much water?

So check the meter to see if it's based on an actual or estimated reading.
If you think it's too high, do a flow test to see if there is a leak.

You need to know the meter reading from your move it date to the meter reading now and that will tell you how much you have used.
